Newbie on Cerberus craving some info

    Hello all,

I discovered FF XIV late but loving it and trying to do my best.

I'd love to read a tutorial or a guide explaining in depth the classes/jobs mechanincs, and also something about crafting. I started as an Arcanist, but I know I have to choose another class as a job (true?) and I can raise other classes too... I fear to get a bit lost and any info/suggestion about something up-to-date to read would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you everyone, see you in game!

You can advance any or all of the classes and jobs if you want to (and personally, I think it's worth at least trying out each of them for a few levels to see what they're like), but as for which Arcanist will lead you to, there are two main options:

You can add in Thaumaturge, and when you get ACN to level 30 and THM to 15, unlock the Summoner job.
Summoner is a DPS job like Arcanist itself, so it can be seen as an advanced continuation of what you're doing from 1-30.

And/or you can add in Conjurer, and when you get ACN to 30 and CNJ to 15, unlock the Scholar job.
Scholar is a healer job, so a bit more of a shift to a different specialty (though you still have your Arcanist skills as well).

Basically each job requires one class having reached level 30 and another having reached level 15. All skills and traits from the primary class (the one that has to be 30) remain available to the job, and certain skills from either the secondary class or one additional class can be used by assigning them to cross-class skill slots. Summoner can cross-class skills from Thaumaturge or Archer. Scholar can cross-class skills from Conjurer or Thaumaturge.

Since both Scholar and Summoner are job specializations of the Arcanist class, all XP earned on either of them advance your Arcanist level, and both use whatever level Arcanist is at. (I.e. ACN, SMN, and SCH will all share the same level.)

Seeing as you are on cerberus I invite you to our FC. We always like helping and should be able to answer your questions as well. As for a guide... you generally don't need it. The game will explain most things for you in a decent enough way. If you want to know how the jobs are endgame though it goes something along the lines of:

high dps - monk - somewhat positional reliance - combo based(you have flank and back bonuses but it doesn't break your combos if you don't exectue properly)
high spike dps - dragoon - heavy positional reliance - combo based (you can mess up your chain if you execute it on the wrong side)
high dps - though feels slow(due to cast times) - blackmage - generally you do fire III, fire I spam, blizzard III(or convert/etc....), thunder, fire III, fire I spam... repeat as needed(execute procs when they are up)...
damage over time high dsp - summoner - apply dots, spam ruin, hit with fester, bane etc... depending on the fight
100% uptime dps - bard - heavy shot spam while maintaining a few dots, and buffs, heavy reliance on procs
straight up healing(big heals, big aoe heals, regen) - white mage
mitigation type healing(shields, damage reduction) - scholar
heavy damage mitigation tank - paladin - enmity combo and mp regen combo, GCD based stun, a lot of damage mitigation CDs, take no damage for 6s CD and can move
high HP tank - warrior - enmity combo and a dps combo, off GCD stun, generally easier to hold enmity due to having overpower, bind both you and target for 6s do not allow HP to drop below 1 CD

There are synergies between classes/jobs... if you are any kind of caster you want thaumaturge to 26 for swiftcast, if you are a healer you want arcanist to 34 for eye for an eye, if you are any of the DPS you want lancer to 22 for invigorate(to get back TP) and so on...

Thank you for the kind answers. That means I can raise every class from scratch to test/use them and I will also have a limited amount of other classes skills in my main class, right?

    Sounds yummy.

Correct. Each job has 2 classes that they can pull skills from and some of those are useful for some while other for others.

    I see, thanks you again.

One last thing for now. What's the difference between a guild and an FC?

Guilds are run by NPCs and teach players new classes, FCs are run by players and a way for people to group together.

Buuuut you'll sometimes see people saying "guild" when they're talking about FCs, because FCs in this game are what other games call guilds. Just to be aware.
