It was actually put in place during the beta to stop people who had literally thousands of posts on the forums from replying to every single thread with nonsense to boost their post count.

I am fine with a post limit (maybe make it a bit higher) because that can be used to cool down some discussions.

But a 10000000% yes to the character limit. I mean its not like we are allowed to post half a book as a post..its such a small limit that you are barely able to say anything, especially if you also quote someone. How much sense does a discussion forum make when you cant really discuss normally?
