Trading items to myself : Mission Impossible

What exactly is the point of alts in this game?

I created multiple characters during 1.0 to store and sell all the stuff I had accumulated in the game...it was risky way to do it, but the game was pretty much slow by that time and now in ARR all my stuff was scattered across my other characters...would like to do some clean up.
