ugh... inventory management between 4 retainers is enough to deal with. I can't imagine doing it across alts. Nor trying to reap the benefits dailies by converting untradable currencies into mats... more power to you if that's your thing.
If your FC lead is polite enough, you could have him invite your alt so you can put things on the FC chest and have your alt take them out. That's what I do nowadays.
Before that, I'd put items on sale for 1 gil, then quickly log on my alt to buy it. Was anticipated by another player only once, and he was kind enough to return the item to my alt (and as a way to thank him for his good heart, I crafted another of the same item for him for free).
With how limited housing wards are, I feel kinda bad knowing there are some belonging to the same player...

I don't currently do anything on alts because of the inability to easily transfer stuff back and forth. If I could, I would absolutely make alts for some classes, just so that my armory chest would be less cluttered & annoying (especially the Ring tab). Don't even care that I'd have to re-level DoL, I'd do it.
Also, desynthesis.
10 posts per page is only the default setting; it is bad, and you should feel bad if you haven't changed it.

I have my main plus 3 mules, each with 3 retainers. Inventory management is simple:
-common crafting mats/materia on main
-fish/mob drops on 1st (3x marauder retainer)
-botany stuff on 2nd (3x botany retainer)
-mining stuff on 3rd (3x miner retainer)
I only use one retainer per alt, and autosort for easy finding of junk
I created multiple characters during 1.0 to store and sell all the stuff I had accumulated in the game...it was risky way to do it, but the game was pretty much slow by that time and now in ARR all my stuff was scattered across my other characters...would like to do some clean up.
You realize you necroed a thread from September 2014 right?I created multiple characters during 1.0 to store and sell all the stuff I had accumulated in the game...it was risky way to do it, but the game was pretty much slow by that time and now in ARR all my stuff was scattered across my other characters...would like to do some clean up.
Let's be honest here guys, the real reason they don't want to allow this is because then nobody would pay $4/month for the 2 extra retainers. I don't believe for one second that this prevents or hinders RMT in any way since RMT use multiple accounts anyways.
As I've said numerous times and will continue to say: It's not a direct way to combat RMT, it's a consequence.
You can only send mail to people on your friends list (this is to prevent mail spam, which is a very real issue with RMTers and IS actually working)
You cannot send friend invites to offline players (Another issue. Can you imagine how many friend requests from RMTers we would have to deal with if this wasn't the case?)
Therefore, since you can't log in 2 characters from the same account in at once (there's a whole host of reasons why they do this and this has been a thing since before even FFXI) you can't friend yourself, and you can't send mail to yourself.
Since making it so you could would require effort and the payoff is minimal at best (the majority of plays don't actually make judicious use of alts compared to other games. There is no **PRACTICAL** reason to have more than 3 anyway. RPers need not apply for that.) they've opted to simply not directly fix it.
Call it "laziness" but I can say with absolute certainty that this is NOT the only game that prevents this by a long shot.
Hey now, we don't want to give any power to the RMT. Like, let's say, the power to instantly spam everyone on the entire server. Or the power to avoid blacklisting by creating unlimited characters on one account within a short span of time. Or the power to avoid account termination for solid month stretches, allowing time to generate a large profit per account. One man should not have all that power.
But seriously, it would be cool if we had maybe one retainer that would be shared on account, much like other games have a bank tab that is shared. Maybe the shared retainer would be unlocked after ONE character on the account had reached level 50 and finished the main quest, which would be a reasonable hurdle to stop the most blatant RMT abuse.
Neither of which has anything to do with alts on your own account. They could have the rule be that Friends and alts can send you mail, or that your alts are automatically included on your Friends list, or any of probably dozens of other possibilities, none of which would allow RMTs to send you anything unless those RMTs were alts on your own account. Transfers within a single account are completely different than transfers between accounts and don't involve any of the same RMT issues. It's not a request to freely transfer items to anyone and everyone. It's specifically a request to be able to freely tranfer items between our own alts. You can only send mail to people on your friends list (this is to prevent mail spam, which is a very real issue with RMTers and IS actually working)
