Yeah, so I love Final Fantasy and all but...

I pre-ordered this game when it first became available, bought a computer so I could even play it with its requirements, made a char and apparently made it to level 16, and now some time later I'm back in action with a brand new computer that can definitely run the game smoothly.

However, I'm very confused about something.

How the hell do I tell my ping to the server ??

All the posts that tell you how to do it are from last year, and the technique they describe can either no longer be used or cannot be used in the way they are instructing you to.

I would love to play this game again, and definitely don't mind making a new character, but although I love being on the Cactuar server (muhehehehh.), I tend to go for lower ping servers in general. (being an *ahem* pro-gamer..... bwahahahahh......)

I'm located in Montreal, and I heard both of the NA datacenters were in Montreal, so I guess I shouldn't be bothered with this question at all.

But for some reason, there's NO WAY to tell your ping to the server, whether in-game or outside of the game, explicitly.

Can anyone help me out on this question ??.......

    .....

    Love, cheers.

    (P.S. 1000 character post limit ??..... wth?????)

Well, matter of fact, I reckon it might be a good thing to start anew anyway. I'm pretty lost in the game now, storyline and all, running around, so far. Anyway, once I get this matter settled, then maybe I can make a wise decision and either start fresh on another server or keep rollin' on this mighty level 16 I already have. .....

I know its kind of stupid. But after you post something hit the edit button and finish your post, bypasses the limit.

Haha, I never knew that, thanks! I've seen folk with big long replies and just thought it was some kind of "reward" for posting regularly or something.

This forum's arbitrary rules confuse me no end.

    Welcome!

I presume when people are testing their ping to SE's servers, they're usually playing on the PC version and hence are using special programs to test their connection speed. However, in game you can determine your connection in a general way by highlighting the connection icon in the top right of the screen (the little 'wifi' icon next to the clock) - it will show two numbers, one with a 'S' next to it, the other a 'R' - these stand for 'sending' and 'reply' and are basically a representation of your connection to the game. If 'reply' is a large number or if one or the other shows a zero next to it, then that's usually a sign you're having connection troubles.

When it comes to networking though I'm a wimp though so I'm sure there's someone here who knows far more about it than me and can give you better advice, I'm sorry. I hope that helped a little though, so don't be discouraged! FFXIV is an amazing game that is well worth the effort resolving any issues you may have.

Since you're on a PC, you can do a manual ping test using the command prompt in Windows.

To open this, Start menu, type "cmd" in the search (assuming Windows 7)

When the box opens up, type "ping " followed by the IP address of the server. The addresses can be found here
    http://www.arrstatus.com/

Since you're on Cactuar you would type "ping 199.91.189.23". It might also be worth pinging the NA lobby server too, which is "199.91.189.74".

You can check your ping to the server in real time using
Windows Resource Monitor > Network tab > select ffxiv.exe and check your latency under TCP Connection.

Great tip. Thanks. That worked great for me. I'll be sure to remember it for other games and services as well.

To the other repliers, for some reason, I cannot ping any of the servers - they all time out. Maybe it's just me, or my firewall. And the in-game thingie looks more like packets in/out to me than latency, and it's way unstable to tell anything really either. Thanks anyway though. Now I know I have around 20-30 ping to the servers -- a pretty safe spot to be, indeed, hehehehhh !!!!.....
