Chocobo Rank 10 Barding Question

So I got rank 10 chocobo today and unlocked my Dragoon Barding for all points into Attacker stat. So I grabbed a Reagan Pepper and reset my stats, then put them all into the Defender stat but no barding was unlocked. What gives? I thought that you could unlock them all this way? Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately that's not how the barding works. You don't get to 10, grab a pepper, refill another tree and Boom! new barding.

You need to use a Thavnarian Onion to break the Chocobo's rank cap and keep leveling him up to 16 before your next barding unlocks; you'll get your 3rd barding at rank 20. I believe this was confirmed by the guy that has a rank 20 chocobo already; there's a thread floating around somewhere.

You need 1 Thavnarian Onion to break each level cap you hit so that you can keep pushing to the next level.
