After some of the stuff they've pulled, this doesnt surprise me one bit tbh.

You seem to assume an awful lot. Have I lost valuable materials to a failed synth? Of course. Twice in a row with Reclaim up, at one point, but also on occasion without Reclaim, due to misjudging how much CP or durability I have remaining, or taking a risk and doing that final Synthesis step without Steady Hands.
The thing is, though, when these mistakes happen, they are all MY doing. There is NO randomness involved when it comes to failing a synth; any crafter capable of attempting the synth in the first place can finish a synth, as long as they have all the proper cross-class abilities and reserve the proper amount of durability and CP. If a recipe explodes, it's because the crafter took chances in order to try to increase the quality (or, possibly, because it's their first time doing a high-level synth and were not prepared for the difficulty).
Don't assume that all crafters look at the risk of failure in the same light as you do! From the sounds of it, for you it indicates a flawed system. For others, it's the one of the things that keeps crafting interesting!
Yes, it's been confirmed that it comes from Retainer Ventures.
The only benefit some people might get is that they have additional retainers, simply a higher chance of yielding it.
Nothing game-breaking, it's just dye. You could argue "BUT THEY CAN MAKE GIL!", as if gil really has any gameplay impact on the game outside crafting/gathering it's mostly cosmetic.
The game has done it's best to avoid gil as being a necessity, meaning if you didn't want to ever buy materia/weapons/gear/potions/food, you're still perfectly capable of doing almost everything the game has to offer without it.
But I agree, it really should've come as a low % gathering node for 3-star gatherers to THEN be made by 3-star crafters.
