Disagree. Every developer wants to work for Valve, I don't think Valve would employ him, their principle is "the gamers are your bosses" so build their games to be fun for the gamer, Yoshi isn't really showing a gamer centric stance, especially when it comes to basic stuff like housing, he is absolutely mistaken which is why they kept quiet about the much desired feature of housing, they knew it would kick up a storm, if you know something you implement is going to annoy the vast majority of your gamers (and isn't about balance or a required feature) you don't put it in, you get a work around, so no, as a director Yoshi has failed.

I don't think you even begin to comprehend his position and the difficulties you'd face.

To put it in meme terms, one does not simply "please all players".

FFXIV has to balance long term design, physical resources, multiple player views that consistently collide between them (have you ever read this forum before?) all this while having a limited schedule of fast release cycles. Handling an RPGMMO isn't even close to handling an offline game or a lobby game and as much as I like Valve (for more reasons than their games. I like their involvement in pushing game development to higher grounds) things are never binary.

The current implementation of personal housing is bad, this is undeniable. If you ask me, it should've been an instanced room and be done with this bullshit. If you wanted a real house, get a FC.

You, however, don't understand the problems that may have led to them taking the current route and as such you cannot understand if he has "failed as a director". A director's job is not only to make right choices, you see; sometimes, it's about making sure you choose the lesser evil.

You see, the best thing a developer can do is listen to its players.

EDIT: If you think I'm white knighting this game, you are wrong. I barely play it and I don't even really like its gameplay that much (I play because a friend really enjoys it, so I'm tagging along for the ride). That, however, doesn't make me incapable of appreciating the work Yoshida and his team has done and keeps doing.

When there is a 170 + page thread (probably 180 + by now) going on, people want it.

You should know that this thread was necobumped and almost all of pages in belongs to the december-january.
And actually the story will be the same - price will fall and people will calm down. Everyone at rage, because they wanted their house now and for free (we saw this rage already), but in fact devs tries to remove excessive money, especially from those who keep them in huge amounts.
Back in "FC House rage" our guild bought house for 250 mils, and now - almost everyone bought their house, if they spent at least some efforts towards it.

The same will be with personal houses - I know some people who can buy a large house outright, and small house is costly, but still can be bought by everyone involved with "excessive money-making schemes" (4 million gil is really a joke if you are professional crafter/gatherer/spiritbonder/run seller/etc). And with time prices will fall and it'll make houses more accessible for wide crowd of people.

I couldn't care less about housing. I do care about what people want to keep them in the game. Whatever floats their bubble. It's more fun when there are lots of people around doing all kinds of stuff.

I appreciate their work and I also praise them even when we get a minor QoL change which often should have been there in the first place, better late than never right? I can't appreciate the ongoing dev comments where the console or server limitations cause trouble for them to ajdust, implement, rework or change things. So yes, the best thing a developer can do is listen to their players. We don't know if they listen when there is no solid feedback other than said limitation. We already know that story, give us the real story.

If resources were truly the issue, why waste server space on personal housing at all? On Balmung MANY FCs have no house yet. Plots have been sold out for ages. One housing plot could have meant SCORES of people at least had a room within a FC house. Instead we have individuals with a house for ONE person.
