Well, apart from prescedent. And allowing people to skip to t9 without succeeding at 6-8.

Personally the ONLY way I would be happy on the day that coil lockouts are removed, is if the lesser tiers still MUST be cleared once on that character, before the latter ones can be unlocked.

They didn't for first coil. I wish they had. Far too many scrubs I've met who skip T4, have never done it, and never will. Perish the thought that now they can't do T7 lol.
The trouble is the kind of MMO model he is now emulating in full force. This is part of the rat race treadmill condition people are now very familiar with: a lot more familiar with than people were back in the early 2000s when MMOs were still rising in popularity. Basically the trick is to make some kind of content that can only be cleared through and seen by a small percentage of people. Those people effectively advertise the place by wearing the higher level gear and make others want to do it, followed by those other people trying the content. Eventually this pattern goes to the lowest common denominator and leaves the least capable and the late comers bashing their heads on content they can't clear because the ones who have cleared it are now just farming and want nothing to do with the other people trying to learn the content still.

The fact is they don't need to remove lock outs as much as just make an easier version of the content that players can go through first. Then everyone gets to see all the different bosses + cutscenes and can go and do the harder versions in whatever order they want.

Then there's still the issue of only being able to play the most challenging content in the game once per week, and only effectively with a static. If one doesn't work a steady 9 to 5 or they've a flexible irl schedule for whatever reason a static is near impossible, and since most of the people who want it static it it makes PFing it very annoying. It's just an antiquated and poorly thought out design that punishes people with different work commitments, at worst, and at best makes for very bored people who only get to play the game once a week, if SCOB is all they've left to do.

The whole lockout system isn't SE's fault. It's really human being's fault. It's how the brain's reward center works.

Do a pleasurable activity, gain a reward(dopamine). Do the same activity over and over, get rewards. However, if you can keep just doing it as much as you want, the brain will give you less and less rewards. It will take more and more of that activity to get the same "rush" as it did the first few times.

So, like syrcus tower for instance. Wasn't it kind of fun at first, but now it's pretty boring? They only allow you one reward each week though, so you keep going back but now since you've done it a bunch, it's kind of a chore. Second coil on the other hand, you can get as many rewards as happen to drop. But you can only see things drop from each boss once per week.

They are limiting it on purpose, to keep it interesting. To make sure at least once each week you are getting your dopamine fix. How would you be addicted still otherwise?

If they don't do that, you would have been over doing coil months ago and wouldn't go anymore.

It being "hard" or "easy" doesn't really matter at all. The game just needs people to keep coming back each week... Even if it's just one day a week you are getting your fix. As long as that fix keeps coming, you'll probably fill out the rest of the week in game doing something else to tide over till that next coil fix. The fact that second coil is a bit hard does help space out the "fixes" a bit longer though. Being a bit harder means that it's going to take someone a bit longer to realize that this activity is being gated.

    It's just like television serials.

How many of you cant wait to see the next episode of some tv show, anime or the sequel to some movie (avengers 2, guardian of the galaxy 2, etc)? You know, if the studios wanted, they could have just filmed all that stuff at once and showed you a whole season at once, or several movies at once. No reason to though... You'd have gotten over it so quickly and never looked back.

    snip.
Even if I really enjoyed your deep analyse of the human brain, there is a major point where you can't compare an mmo to a weak television serial.
When watching a movie you re actually totally passive which isn't the case when playing (even if it make almost no difference for the reptilian brain who get every fictional informations for real before getting informed back about truths from the cortex) and this physical activity is actually giving more informations to your limbic system and so, create a quicker and stronger emotional link when playing a video game.

Now about your dopamine fix, they could remove coil restriction entry and it would not affect it at all but actually make your emotional link even stronger since the brain love everything that re repeatables/habits things... In the end, they would actually keep more subscriptions alive if there was no sort of weekly limitations, because of the brain addiction to those repeatable habits.

Once again, bad game design is bad they really should hire someone to advise them about human brain, they could make more money.

I see no logical reason that some are against having it be merely a loot lock, like CT/ST, and not a full on content lock. It's a very frustrating and antiquated approach that doesn't jive well with the FC community they want us to foster. This isn't like Dynamis or Einherjar or Salvage in XI where you could enter with different numbers of people, up to a certain cap, so that having more members improves participation and diversity. It's the exact opposite. You need -exactly- 8 players, no more, no less. Those players have to be there every single time, essentially, as any potential temporary replacement is a) in a static of their own and is locked or can't lock themselves or b) only gets to run it with you that once due to the regular static member being unavailable. There is zero flexibility and zero incentive. It blows my mind that an 8-man is even considered a raid these days so preventing people from enjoying paid content w/o loot in a Simon Says mechanic super-dungeon is pretty flabbergasting. Why do we feel the need to cling to decade old ideas about how to handle progression walls and inhibit rapid overgearing? This doesn't need to be WoW, and it shouldn't be. Lootlock only. People who only care about loot will keep only running it once a week. People who want sot play the game can play the game.

Aside from people selling clears (news flash, this happens even with the lock out in place) I've no clue why SE won't just implement a system that has a weekly loot lockout like ST. If people want to buy / sell clears they are going to do it lock out or not. All this lockout does is discourage the average FC from having event nights where more than 8 people are involved.

SE has maintained certain patterns with their patchs they WILL unlock SCOB in 2.4 when 3rd coil is released just like how 1st coil was unlocked when 2nd coil was first released.

At which time Third Coil will be content locked for a solid chunk of a year in keeping faithful with circa 2004-and-earlier MMOs.

Once again, reading comprehension much ?

We care about the CURRENT CONTENT being unavailable to play with more than 7 people. I am a fc leader and all this entry lockout has made is a mess. It is a nightmare to manage and a disappointment that i can't go with some of my members and have to catter to the same 7 members, which lead to other competent members leaving down the road, not because they don't enjoy us but because we can't provide them with a static theyr rightfully want too.

Which is precisely why I've moved back to FFXI (and holy crap, I've actually been having fun. Even grinding levels was fun. Went from level 22 starting at Qufim Islands to Upper Delkfutts Tower with two friends + Trust magic, eventually making our way to Sea Serpent Grotto or something, stopping at level 44). I'll come back to experience 2.4 and do Second Coil with my friends, but once we're geared in High Allagan crap and clear T9 and no longer have a point to do it... back to FFXI I go (even if I'm offered to join my friends static for Third Coil... no. I can't stand statics any more).
