Cracking a password is easy. The point of an authenticator is to prevent someone from easily hacking your account. Hence why it is a completely separate device instead of software on your PC or your phone, etc. If someone hacks your phone they have your authenticator, your personal information, and it's not a far stretch to figure out from there your e-mail, your user name, hack your password, then bam account compromised.
Of course the likeliness of this happening is slim, but still. A separate piece of hardware is way more secure then a software version.
