    Chocobo Colouring woes

    ... or lack of !

Im a total Noob to this game - I know. even though 'happy' people keep insisting on telling me when im playing a dungeon for the first time and it causes irritation that my noobishness is slowing down their 4560th go at said dungeon just for point scoring purposes... anyway I digress..

I want a fancy @ss chocobo ... it does not seem to be a simple or straightforward process. people going on about RGB values -- various fruits.. etc..

Im a 45 archer currently so think I had resigned myself to the fact that I had to wait till I was 50 till I could become a botanist? oh ... no to get seals ? so I could buy seeds to plant in a company garden?

I had purchased a rectangular garden ... only then to realise I didn't have land to put it on .. and said land cost millions of gill.. HA !

    so is this correct ?

I have to get to level 50 - to be able to do them seal things? - to be able to buy seeds - to be able to grown my own fruits - to feed to my chocobo?

I did attempt to 'easy' way round - and just buy mega expensive fruits .. I read somewhere (and its a minefield of various fruit colour combinations) that 5 valfruits? gave salmon pink ?

so I spent a tonne on 5 valfruits ... stabled my bird and fed him up..

on a side note - am I supposed to feed all this in one single feed? or is it the same to feed one after another within a certain timeframe? and if its in one feed how do I combine multiple fruits into one feed?

anyway - it said "plumage change in 6 1/2 hours .. so I left it - popped back to check the time was going down - 4 ... 3 ... 2....

this morning I came back hoping for some change - my chocobo plumage change message was gone, and it was just boring yellow still

if this is an RGB thing - and assuming that desert yellow is the start point ... I was assuming (assumption being the mother of all f-ups) that there would be 'some' change ... no matter how minor ? or is there only certain colours your bird can change to and you have to exactly hit a certain RGB value for any change to take effect?

also - how is everyone getting so many fruits? is everyone growing their own?

ideally I wanted a black , white, or red chocobo ... but in reality I think anything (even pink) would be a nice change.

    Check out this thread:
    Microfeeding.

This calculator will help you work out how much of each fruit to use to get the colour you want:
    Calculator.

For the colour to change, you need to see a message that says something like "[Name] is beginning to grow new feathers!" That tells you that you have reached another colour. The new plumage message is just a generic auto response to feeding. Means nothing.
You don't need Botanist to grow the fruit. You can buy the seeds with allied seals, which you get from hunts. Cost 15 seals for 1 seed. Then you just need a FC house to plant them. They do take a while to grow if you don't have fertilizer. You generally get around 27 fruit from one seed. (Or I have anyway.) I think it depends on what soil you use and fertilizer though.

    Hope that helps.

    thanks ! that's very useful.

so if I feed my bird any combination .. will I expect to get a message about returning in a number of hours - even though there is no actual change in the end ? Just seemed confusing that it 'seemed' to be working - then just did nothing.

Ive never seen them 'starting to grow new feathers' messages so I guess whatever fruits Ive been feeding did nothing.

also - do I have to feed in one single feed ? or can I feed one fruit... then another... then another.. within a certain time period?

I think I'll push on to 50 and start doing hunts for seals..

You can give as many fruits as you want one after another, but if there is a specific colour you want it might be best to stick to one type of fruit and stop feeding when you see the growing new feathers message. Then after it's changed feed some more and so on.

This chart might help you to get the colour you want, but keep in mind there is some RNG involved and you may get a different result than you expected. Still it's better than nothing.

    1) If you didn't get a message about the bird growing new feathers the combination of fruits you gave it weren't enough to push it into a new color.

    2) You can feed as many fruits as you want within the 6 hour time frame. While you can theoretically map out the types and approximate amount of fruits you can feed to go straight from Desert Yellow to any color you want, I still personally think it's a smarter idea to feed fruits until you get one feather message and then wait and see what it changes to before feeding it anything else, especially if you're new to the whole dye thing. It'll take longer to reach your desired color, but it makes it easier to plan your path and fix mistakes or overshoots.

My best suggestion ATM is read, use, and apply the knowledge from the two above links.

Many of us has spent almost the whole past month, millions of gils, hundreds/thousands of fruits, just trying to improve ways to help others to obtain the color they want for their chocobo.

So why do you want to waste your time and gil to repeat the mistakes we have already done?

With the calculator and the microfeeding method, it is highly likely you will get your color after one feeding, as many have already done, unless you wish to jump into the color trap that many have already been. To be honest, I do not think there is a better approach ATM then what those two tools offers.

At times I had to feed my bird 10 fruits in a row before I even got the "beginning to grow new feathers" message would pop up, just a heads up it sometimes varies.
