Yes it is a lame idea and it is a pretty unfun and monotonous grind.
I'm convinced SEs primary motivation is to infuse high level players into the FATE system to keep it running, so newbies can actually complete them.

However, every DEV worth his salt should implement a failsafe against bad streaks in a progression mandatory RNG grind.
Remember: Not getting Atma breaks the whole relic quest chain, we're not talking about some superfluous mount here.

It could be as simple as a guaranteed drop after 200 Fates in a zone (more than enough time spent) or they could do something more elaborate like Blizzard and gradually ramp up the dropchance after a certain (unknown to prevent exploits) threshold.

But a system like this MUST exist, because after all this is a GAME and precious free time spent MUST be rewarded.
Not instantaneously, mind you, but eventually the player MUST reap the rewards or he will simply ditch the game in frustration (Hint: this is a bad thing).

It's believable, just means somewhere out there someone got 12 atma in 30 minutes. OP is the unfortunate one on the low end of the bell curve RNG graph.

There is 168 hours in one week. This means that you spent less than 2.5 hours each day sleeping/eating/bathroom...
Doubt it. Stop trolling the forums, your making those of use who did spend a long time farming atma, and complained about it a lot, look bad.

It took me about 800-900 fates (too lazy to log in to get accurate numbers) to get my set of 12 and that was ridiculous (imo). over 400 of those were in East Shroud. (Anyone got a torch, I am gonna burn that place to the ground...sorry moogles)

So either you have severe medical issues, or you are on a whole lot of drugs, cause even in my gaming prime i could never log over 150 hours of game time in one week... 100 maybe, 150+ ? Maybe on multiple games, with about 10 cases of monster, a freezer full of food and a microwave right next to me, with my pc set up in the bathroom so i could stay sitting on the toilet...

oh and the next week spent in the ER.

The sad thing is SE won't change it. Unless they recently changed their mind... I mean, apparently they don't care that someone out there is going to play this game and potentially never get an atma weapon.

Based on a 2% drop rate you would have a 0.000000000000000000004096 % chance of getting 12 atma in 12 fates.
Based on 1 atma dropping every 50 fates (guarenteed) you would still have to do 600 fates to get 1 set, 6000 for the 9 current jobs + one set for ninja.
Based on a "true RNG" you are most likely not going to get atma. a 2% chance means that on AVERAGE you will land in the 2% twice in 100 tries...unfortunately that is only true with an infinite number of iterations. In a finite sample 2% could (with higher probability then you think) never happen. Personally I think they have a bugged RNG or it isn't true. In fact it could even be skewed. For example if you want to generate a random number beteen 2-12 you can roll 2 six sided dice. However, this is a poor way of doing it, as numbers like 6,7,8 have a higher chance of appearing then 2,3,11,12... it is easy to accidentally increase the odds of a 'random' number appearing more then others even though it's supposed to have an equal % chance to appear for each number.

All in all I like someones suggestion they posted before me. give it a % chance, fine. But after x fates with 0 drop, drop becomes guarenteed on next fate in same area, and the condition for a guarenteed atma drop resets. so if they set it to 200 fates until drop was guarenteed then i would be okay with that. sure id have to do a maximum of 2400 fates per set, but i would know 100% that if i did 200 id get it. if i ggot it earlier then sweet, if not, i can see my progress in real time and be assured that im not wasting time/money on subscription/lack of socializing from fate induced zombification.

I have better odds at most casino games in Las Vegas, but I still come back a few hundred dollars poorer every trip.

I farmed atmas 27 hours each day and then slept 8 hours. /sarcasm.

it took me a total of about 92 hours to complete my first set of atma, and I just recently farmed a second set in about 1 1/2 days of rather lazying it around. Sorry, I know people have spent unreasonable amounts of time on this quest, but I think you're full of chocobo poo with your 850+ hour remark, and it doesn't help anything exaggerating like that.

i just want to throw my 2 cents out there.

OP is obviously lying, i dont think anyone disagrees with that, but as some of you have stated about "actually work for it and youll have it in no time", and having that kind of mentality, you are completely wrong. im not going to give hours, because that never works. what i can do is give the number of fates i have right now. i am currently sitting at 784 fates, with 4 atma. after my first couple fates as a lowbie, i hated all those lv 50s that were running aroung, killing everything before i could get a hit on it. so i stopped with 9 fates as a pre-50 character. mu first 2 atma took a couple days each, and the i ran into a 500-600 fate streak of nothing. i recently got back into it, and got my next 2 atma in the same day, havent gotten anything since and im stuck farming east shroud until something does. granted, i only farm atma in downtime now, since my no-drop streak caused me to leave the game for a month and a half.

is it brokem? no, i just dont have much luck, and i have already went a different path for my weapon, i got the soldiery. i think it sucks that there wasnt a failsafe implemented with this, because it is entirely possible to never get an atma drop, no matter how unlikely. i would gladly grind 200 fates for a guaranteed atma drop, just because it would stop this "i hope it drops this time" game that we have now, because, for me, it was never about it taking too long, or being too hard, its the fact that you never know if you will get it.

850 hours. If he done on avg 6 fates an hour, thats 10 minutes a fate. He would have done 5100 fates. Yet he hasn't achieved the 1000 fates completed achievement.

Did you even read the other replies?

While I personally don't believe the OP either, you guys are aware that a lot of people create forum alts because they don't want strangers searching around in their achievement history trying to disprove everything they say?

I needed 390 Fates for my Atma set with 144 Fates just for the Maiden (yeah playing hard to get.. sheesh...).
Guess I was one of the lucky ones or they bumped the droprate w/o notice. I assumed it was in the 3-5% range.
