The longer people stay, the far less likely they are to leave simply due to the human nature to not want to give up on something you've invested thousands of hours into. WoW's players are some of the most attached because they've been there since launch, so while subs may dwindle, they'll stay strong for years to come simply because people are reluctant to walk away from something they know and have put so much time into.

If WildStar or ArcheAge were more of a threat, SE would be in more trouble atm than they are, but when there's no competition, you can be mediocre, or even crappy and people will stay if only because there's no better option, but it doesnt mean FFXIV is a "good" or "great" game, just "least bad" of the options out there. It runs good, looks decent, but it relies on grind (thats not entertaining or fun), and RNG/Fate Camping far far too much.

Simply the fact the game has FF in the title will keep it alive and well, esp in Japan. Whether or not that will be enough in the US/EU to keep the subs up I dont know. I'm trying to hang on until 2.4 before I decide my long term MMO plans, but with some of the rather stupid things SE has done of late, they need to get this train back on track soon, before some other game does come along and pose a threat. You can only coast for so long after all.

I think its funny. Everyone wants the reward but no one wants to work for it.

But now the game feels more like work than it does... a game. It feels like a chore. I feel obligated to log in and do my dailies instead of wanting to do them because they're fun. I'm tired of farming hundreds of crystals and tomatoes to make those damn relishes to turn in for artisan specs that only give me rose gold nuggets. I'm tired of working my ass off to get money to afford Fieldcraft IIIs. WORK shouldn't apply to GAMEPLAY. WORK is for WORK. Games are for PLAY.

What I find funny are people who defend grinds. People who think it's ok to drag something out for the sake of "working for it". You shouldn't have to pay money for a second job. Second jobs should be making YOU money. I would love to work towards getting the supras... if I knew it wasn't a total waste of time. I would love to do my daily hunts if I didn't wave to waste hours per week for FATEs. I would love to keep playing this game if it didn't feel so much like... WORK.

And that's why I'm having such a hard time getting myself to quit. If I quit, it feels like I gave up a year of my game time for nothing. It's not like I can come back to my character fives year from now when I play the game again for nostalgia's sake.

Then you should probably stay away from MMOs because all MMOs are grind fests to some degree, what you are describing is pretty much wanting things handed to you for even less effort then this game already gives. without dailies and actually putting effort to getting those items people would just cap out on the content in a month then not bother untill a new patch.

I agree to an extent. I think people like having "goals" and there's also nothing wrong with a game having protracted goals - but this game invalidates those "goals" (grinds) and implements new "goals" (grinds) that make the previous effort feel wasted.

The problem I encounter with FFXIV's content "treadmill" is that it's set to the highest possible speed and if you step off - you're hard pressed to get back on. "You should take your time" and "Enjoy it at your own pace" are nice sentiments - but they're also invalid when the game obviously has a set pace and it's rolling over content invalidating it and adding some new treadmill. How do you enjoy it at your leisure when your window for doing so is limited by the development cycle?

After awhile you burn out and get tired - then you're stuck on the sidelines until they add a new treadmill for you to try. You can't sprint (lockouts) and you can't relax (content becoming invalidated quickly) - which makes it feel like work rather than play.

    Snipping for length.
Well, it depends if it's the players first foray into investing in an MMO or not. I played WoW for many years and after finally giving it up something sort of just clicked and I've never really been that attached to a game ever since. Even in FFXIV right now if I could afford another game to play I'd probably jump over and play it...

It's just that the other game happens to by Hyrule Warriors and it isn't out yet.

Also the majority of other games I'm interested in (EQN, Shroud of the Avatar, Star Citizen, etc) are just not out yet or are in an alpha stage.

Not reading 17 pages some of the things probably were mentioned allready.

I quit for 2 months, because I was fed up with the way people treated each other when atma first hit. It was nasty, It was not fun, normal fate grinding was impossible.

Some people quit, because someone "stole their loot". Someone in one of my LS quit because of that. No one thought he is being serious.
Bad luck with any kind of rng.
Because "Girlfriend left him, he doesnt want to play, the game reminds her of her"
"I killed my dog because I let him eat something he shouldnt have while playing"

need to stop my head starts to hurt

Maybe that's the way it should be. People shouldn't have to be obligated to play a game every single day. So long as there are things to look forward to (actual content, not grind fests), people will keep their subs. The supras are the breaking point, though. It's the RNG that's really killing me. I don't see any results from putting in work gathering materials and crafting relishes to trade in for specs to break down. The artisan tool grind was a grind, yes, but I saw guaranteed rewards for my efforts; I knew how far away they were and how much work I had to put in to get them. SE made a very bad design choice with the supra content, because it's practically an ATMA grind for crafters.

Waiting for FATEs is a horrible thing to do, because it isn't something I can just log into during my lunch break and wait for. I have no idea if it's going to pop in five minutes, or in an hour and five minutes. If I could just show up to an interaction point with a key item and pop the fate, awesome. If I could just craft 10 relishes and break down a spec and know I'd get a Fieldcraft III, awesome. I logged in for the day, got what I want done with little effort, and I'll be there tomorrow to do it again. SE keeps me as a customer. See what I'm saying? The whole "Well, it's an MMO and MMOs are MMOs" excuse is a tired one, because it dissuades people from thinking they need to improve things.

I don't know this person, but Why not have a little variety in their personality? Besides it's not like every other person on this thread that is casually responding knows about this 100-page-thread you know of.

    Cheers. ^^

If anything causes me to quit this game, it will be error 90000/2002. I can play any other online game and my connection is flawless with no disconnects. In this game? Happens 4-5 times per 3-4 hour session.
