What exactly is 'Clipping'?

Clipping is when you reapply a buff/debuff, usually a DoT, before it's run out. If you use Touch of Death again while your first Touch of Death still has 6 seconds left, you're clipping ToD, and wasting two ticks of the first one. As a general rule, you don't want to clip DoTs because of this waste, but there are circumstances where it's all right. Mainly if the reapplication results in more overall potency, even with the clipping factored in, than using another skill instead of reapplying the DoT, or if reapplying keeps the rest of your rotation from going screwy and leaving you in a bad place (which, really, is the same as "more overall potency").
