This. Awesome post, Trell, but this really nails it.From the instatement of hunts till this day, you can SEE that most people involved in hunts prefer or at least tolerate working as larger groups. There is a lot more drama created by unreasonably early pulling and resetting (i.e people outside of the consensus) than the other way around.
And this, too.The reality is that consensus among people determines a lot of what is right and wrong in any social context. The wider the consensus, the more right or wrong an action gets. Just step away from the computer and go outside - you'll be confronted with that fact soon enough.
Recently, my FC group and me catched a rank A. A few people were coming, but most of "the zerg" wasn't here.
The monster was pulled more or less accidentally by someone in my group, and then people started to go for it.
Somehow, after a few good Medicas, I got the aggro.
So, I looked around and thought "Damn, that pull was a bit early... People are still not here, but according to the chat, the zerg is coming... but they'll never get there in time."
Then, I casted a few more Medicas in order to hold the aggro, and started to walk away.
I reseted the bloody thing.
A lot more people managed to get here in that time, and we started bashing the mob down again.
After the kill, my team still got the best ranking... but something was different from usual...
Nobody complained in the shout channel. Nobody.
Instead, I got a flow of thanking messages from a lot of people. "Thanks for the reset!" they were saying.
It made my day, because I'm the kind of people who prefers to be helpful and thanked for my actions rather than the dude who will get insulted and hated by everyone.
... and by reading at this thread, I have the feeling that I'm in the minority.
Should I be more selfish and tell people to "deal with it", even if this game is primarily focused on PvE content (aka: non-competitive content)?

If the pull was on accident, then by all means reset it for everyone. But if you drew aggro and reset because you wanted the horde to arrive in time, I'd have been rather ticked and would likely have tried to stop you.
You did a good thing, Fyce.... and by reading at this thread, I have the feeling that I'm in the minority.
Don't be discouraged by the negativity and me-first attitude on these boards. Rather, be encouraged by the goodwill and kind spirits that you actually found in-game.
And what if the party doing the designating is the group that actually put in the effort and found the mob? Wouldn't that by definition -entitle- them to that reward, that someone else leeching off of the info they were nice enough to spread around decided they would take for themselves? Just the other day, I personally found Agrippa (Mor Dhona S-rank) out for a stroll in the Tangle. I sent out the alarm and invited people who were asking for a party invite until my group was full. I stood there, waited a while for people to show up, then all of a sudden I notice Agrippa turn purple. I run in, as Shield PLD, and do my damnedest to get enmity... and ended up with five seals. Not really seeing how that's okay.
I feel I should clarify: the people described here are behaving unacceptably and screaming or sending abusive tells or blacklisting is not okay. But to call this sort of thing "entitlement" is ridiculous.
I'm gonna be frank here. If you pull this kind of thing with a huge-damage mob like Marraco or a petrifier like Zanig'oh, you're not gonna get thanked, you're gonna get reported, because resetting on a mob like that screws over whoever got killed/petrified for longer than the mob's average lifetime. I speak from personal experience here, I -found- Maahes once and the SMN with me didn't have a lot of time, so we shouted and then pulled after ~30 seconds. The horde proceeded to reset it TWICE, and as the party's tank I was petrified BOTH times, destroying any chance I might have had to build up enmity and get anything besides "you poked it once" credit.
This has been discussed to death on other threads, and we even had Enkatreia weigh in on it: resetting a mob can be considered harassment and can leave you subject to punishment.

You are NOT in the minority. The minority are the loud obnoxious selfish folks who come here in an attempt to justify and rationalize their bad behavior. They do so by making up stories and wishfully thinking that it is supposed to be competitive or how SE meant this for small groups etc. etc. They are mad that they didn't get their way in game so they come here to stink up the forums. This is their echo chamber and heave forbid we inject some reality and models for sensible behavior.
This convo isn't about the TOS, it's about the fact the OP and his party did something nice to help their fellow players. This has been discussed to death on other threads, and we even had Enkatreia weigh in on it: resetting a mob can be considered harassment and can leave you subject to punishment.
Also, NyarukoW's post above me is spot-on.
Until you realize the very real possibility that some of those who were there from the beginning that would have gotten full credit instead got silver, or even bronze. And again I point you to my own personal experiences with resetting. I fail to see what was so "nice to their fellow players" about that.
