Earlier this week I finally broke 30 on my Thaumaturge and became a Black Mage.
But it just didn't seem all that challenging.

My first character was a WHM, I then went monk. Dabbled in tanking and scholaring before getting to this point. And most of those classes seem to have a lot more going on for it in situational awareness. They seem... tougher.

As a Black Mage/THM all I seemed to need to do was (roughly):

fire fire fire swap ice ice ice swap fire fire fire etc..
With the occasional lightning and fire 2 thrown in there.

And I don't really need to position myself other than outside of AOEs unlike some of the other ones.

Does it get more complicated? Does it get more challenging? Am I totally missing something?

You don't really start to play black mage till 50, really.

Dungeons is pretty much about fire till low mp, transpose till max mp, transpose again etc.
At level 40, it gets a -bit- more interesting as you get your third astral fire/umbral ice stack and at 42 you get firestarter.

Personally, black mage is interesting how to min-max your movement by timing your firestarter/thundercloud procs well and by using aetherial manipulation, especially in movement heavy fights. But this may not be the case for everyone.

the challenge of black mage doesn't come from the rotation, it comes from executing it during high-movement fights (also you won't really be experiencing black mage until you get fire 3/blizzard 3, firestarter, and thundercloud)

Oh dear as a BLM 99 my self that knows the job inside out as main class I can tell you a BLM can and will be the number one DPS in any dungeon you find since BLM is firstly AoE DPS class and secondly can kick many of the other DPS class on single targets. BLM is much about timing and if you are sharp at that you succeed when skilled.

Oh dear as a BLM 99 my self that knows the job inside out as main class I can tell you a BLM can and will be the number one DPS in any dungeon you find since BLM is firstly AoE DPS class and secondly can kick many of the other DPS class on single targets. BLM is much about timing and if you are sharp at that you succeed when skilled.

Blm is good but it's not godly. It's mid-tier single target DPS still, just easier to put out good numbers.

At lower levels blm in dungeons can be useful as crowd control with sleep and that really shouldn't be overlooked. Once you get fire 3 and blizzard 3 the job and your rotation change up a bit. I find blm to be a challenging and rewarding job at end game. And while it's true the basic rotation may be simpler than other DPS jobs there is a lot of nuance and skill needed to maximize your DPS uptime casting spells in most of the end game fights.
