Definitely appreciate that line of thought. What if that buff came in the form of a good defensive cooldown? I feel it would allow for at least a piece of the overextending that tanks get the luxury of.

I think Bards can be pretty effective in drawn out fights, where both sides have decent healers and its a battle of attrition.
Its hard for Melees to keep a high DPS against targets that like to run around, particularly as the fight drags on and they start resisting stuns. And a BLM's DPS drops every time someone focuses on them (its usually a pesky Bard!). But Bards can keep their DPS up while being attacked, and even against moving targets. The fact that they can recover the MP of their own healers helps in these longer fights too.
In rounds where this sort of fight happens, I've had damage dealt scores of over 140K with my BRD.
Interesting thread~ First off, Atreus's numbers are VERY believable. Considering that pld is at the absolute bottom of the killme-list, ALL plds SHOULD be getting these numbers. Higher survivability, way less pressure = way more time to stay engaged and dog your targets. Back in WD, alot of the smart MARs capitalized on the 'ignore me' factor, popped on str gear and went to town. As such, a pld who plays extremely aggressively is a godsend for the team. He can do those behind the scene jobs no one else is geared for (i.e-become an enemy blm's shadow and follow him home to his bedroom) Anyway..the list-
1. BLM (thats right, not healer..and no, not biased..I brd it up)
2. SCH (because EoS is law)
3.DRG (if he really, and I mean REALLY knows what he's doing)
4. WHM (strong ya, but not nearly as indestructible as so many seem to think)
5. SMN (until WD revives where healers can give more personalized attention, smn's leash has really gotten..short)
6. WAR (pretty much a self-sustaining one man army. The day Yoshi extends Holmgram-w/e even 1 yalm, it bumps smn out the way.)
7. PLD (also a contender for the #5 slot depending on what his target priorities are besides the healer)
8. MNK (gonna draw fire for this but w/e. Til mnk gets an ff14 version of Asuran Fist or at least some more hp, it's just a walking mp sink for healers..assuming ones close by. The dispel is tactically..cute? but outside WD, its overall usefullness just doesn't compare to burst.
9. BRD (Yep...my crappy job is last. See..totally unbiased ;)
Considering WD is currently...dormant, which is another matter entirely, the above are just the thoughts for FL. Just a few explainations- BLMs 'left unchecked' can aoe sleep (better than smn bind since even targets directly in front can't be attacked still while up), flare, and LB. Just from personal observation but seen enough consistant times where blm dps is over smns (at least on Primal) to feel this way.
SCH vs WHM. Again...just from personal experience, I can't understand why people say whm is superior to sch (at least in FL) Perhaps many of em don't know how to effectively utilize their job's burst capabilities? (why I say drg > mnk easily) Assuming attunment's not up, once a whm gets stunned, it can be burned VERY easily (or just interrupts in place of stuns) SCHs...do not suffer from this problem. Good ol EoS to save the day. Once he dies that second time tho...
As for brd, its got a bad rep merely because 80% (probably higher) of the brds currently in PvP started out with FL and have no instinctive programing to position themselves correctly at all times (course 101 via WD) I feel like donating a free kill to the opposing team everytime I hear some idiot teammate bitch about me or another brd not standing on the flag while attacking, but newer brds who don't do their research pick up on this and throw positioning out the window. Theres also the fact that we have 2 completely useless mp abilities (if your team needs mp THAT bad beyond battle voice > ballad during downtime, they're hitting the wrong targets and deserve to be killed) and a 'healer LB', all which give the assumption we're only good for 'ticking the mages.' Hence, #9. (For the record, theres no such thing as the brd's burst phase or 900+ farshots! *inserts final line of The Usual Suspects.*
+1 To you.
I'm glad someone actually realizes that dragoon is one of the absolute best. Dragoon is designed for pvp. Crazy on command burst, burst is everything in pvp and dragoon has all the tools to apply it. Two gap closers, fetterward, weapon throw, and elusive jump (which is priceless). Opening burst is in excess of 8k+ damage in a little over 10 seconds in i80, 2 guaranteed interrupts via stun. Dragoon is an absolute machine.
That being said, it's no wonder most see it as an average class, the skill ceiling is too high for most and as such they all suck. There is 2 on primal that are god level though.

All classes are really good if played properly. Healers are also pretty superior and one reason for that is because they have combat resurrections. If opponent have no healers u need kill them only once but if team have healers u need kill them multiple times.
A defensive cooldown would be appreciated but I doubt SE would ever give melee any direct dmg mitigating abilities (aside from the increase parry rate of keen flurry and monk's fist of earth) since it would be seen as an infringement on tank abilities/capabilities. Maybe a melee pvp ability similar to marauder bloodbath except with an increase to the proportion of the amount healed. Though I'd be ecstatic if they gave melee something as simple as a sprint which consumes mp instead of tp lol. Its another unlikely possibility, especially considering melee dps I think are the only jobs with gap closing abilities (namely dragoon's dives and monk's shoulder tackle) as well as the only class that can remove sprint in pvp, but one can dream.

BRD dps is a lot higher than people realize. The trick is to always attack from 15y away (visual indicators help) which most BRDs dont do. Melees are unable to deal full dmg due to greased lighting and positionals and BLM (and to a lesser extend SMN) cant dps propperly when attacked, leaving BRD in a very good spot dps wise when played correctly.
