when will the ps3 support be dropped? (from a ps3 player)

See, at that point it will then be held back by SE not wanting to do things because it will:

1. Stress the players.
2. Create a skill gap.
3. Disallow people who don't play the game to not be able to properly catch up.

(And yes, that's basically a lot of reasons they won't do certain things.)

you realize that any pc have already far more rams than the ps3, other point it's a very old hardware, out since the 11th november 2006... it's quite old, even pc from 2008 was already doing better than the ps3. however, they was using better the console since it didn't change inside for very long.

anyway, the main limitation are not graphical or the processor but the rams, 256mo, how can you expect them to introduce new technologie for them game with this sort of limitation. it did already affect the whole process of creation of the game during the beta of ARR, a lot of limitation (bag, name, city,...) was placed because of the ps3. they want to keep the game growing in population and keep people. they can't do this if them hardware block them, they talk of flying fight and many other high level tech... when you see that the ps3 have some trouble for show all the player when more of 100 are around...

That does not make since to me at all , I mean I do want to try 3.0 because im too curious about the new classes and jobs but why give the system the expansion then drop it some time right after?

What that the Ps3 is now last gen? and that people should be upgrading to the new gen stuff?

That's not what "dropping support" means. When they are talking about dropping support, they mean that a certain content update, let's say an expansion, won't be sold in an X format. People can still play the game on X and Y, but the expansion disc will only be sold to Y players. This means that X players are dropped virtually since they can not progress any farther in the story without the expansion. They can still log in and play though in the world, just don't expect to be able to go any farther in progression.

Erm well depends if they ahve it set up like WoW...... Not sure how FF11 set up is but games that offer free updates dont allow you to log on unless you can down load the current version

XI is the same way, unless you're playing on a private server you can't play XI unless you're fully up to date. They dropped PS2 support but still offer updates (for now) until everyone is switched over to PC/360.

Well, preceding the expansion there was an official poll asking players what systems they played XI on. Obviously, in Japan the majority of pollsters said PS2 and outside of Japan it was majority PC (though I was not one of them, I played PS2 version on my 60g PS3). So no, the PS2 version of XI hasn't been dropped (except by Sony, who stopped production of the PS2 itself in all markets a year or two ago).

What a great system the PS2 was huh? The HDD back then had more space then the 360's hard drives at launch. You are correct about the expansion and such and had explained perfectly why the EU/NA versions of XI on PS2 were dropped.

It would simply require that you had the latest version for YOUR platform even if said platform is no longer receiving major content updates. At update times that platform would only be getting the new item models and sprites and not any new zones, new jobs, new quests etc. It would be the same as playing FFXI without one or more of the expansions.

I'm more hopeful that they'll eventually drop PS3 support than I ever was about them dropping PS2 support on XI. This is mostly because the vast majority of the PS3 audience will eventually upgrade to a PS4 anyway, or at least more than could have been expected to migrate from PS2 to 360 or PC. It may take a long time (or may not -- I obviously have no census numbers), but I could see it happening as soon as 4.0, though I feel that's not especially likely unless Sony starts selling a lot more PS4s.

PS4 is not selling well in Japan (outsold by Vita, 3DS, Wii U, etc if you look at articles from last few months). Market is much more mobile and less console heavy. And PC gaming is also lower there. So I think it will be a while, as the PS3 will be important for the Japanese audience for a while to come. (Still lots of PS3 users in NA/EU too of course, but PS4 is selling much better in those areas).
