"Meaningful" is subjective. I don't think Coil is meaningful, it's just scripted and unimaginative in my eyes, but I'm sure the part of the game I enjoy the most is meaningless to most players in this forum.I think they're unnecessary myself. If it were something simple to implement and was easily toggled on and off, maybe. However, if it were going to take any significant amount of staff or resources... uhh... no. I'd rather they focused on more meaningful content if that were the case.
They have much more urgent matters to work on than a bubble chat system. Every update that even alters or adds those little guide tips is done by the UI team - Every major update tend to add new boss elements, maybe even new elements to your menu (definitely for the new class/jobs) or in the case of 2.4, rogue/ninja stuff, that's part of the UI team as well, which is far more important.
They said during beta the main problem is rendering and that it's largely unnecessary and will focus on using it for NPCs.
It is - However Coil is progression content, so you can't really say it's meaningless unless you can show me where else you get current ilvl cap gear?
NPCs aren't players - All they're doing is pulling up pre-scripted text in a bubble graphics every x amount of seconds/when a player is in a certain distance. That's a farcry from the constant chatter and much more rendering it'll take for hundreds of players. So it does exist for NPCs, and much easier to render since it's just pulling up dialog table entries on a set pattern.

No one is asking this to be a top priority. All we're asking for is a 'yes' and the work for it to be slotted somewhere reasonable in SE's work schedule. I wouldn't even think of trying to put this feature's importance above something like add-ons or ui elements for new jobs or raids. Take for example, hairstyles and lvl1 glamour gear. The people working on it can be put into working more on serious endgame content modelling enemies, gears, or whatever else. But they're still coming, and people are still asking. I don't think anyone is asking these to be put above something like coil or even assuming that the people asking for it are thinking that way, save for a few special cases people. They have much more urgent matters to work on than a bubble chat system. Also, I would like to point out that name plates has the same filter feature. When you point out that having lots of people on your screen and seeing a lot of them talk with chat bubble will obstruct your view, the same can be said with name plates. Going to a mass gathering like hunts, behemoth and odin fate, your view can literally be blotted out by these name plates moving all over the place and distract you from just about anything you're trying to do in these events. But hey! You can turn off these random players's obnoxious name plates, titles, fcs from your screen! That's what we want with chat bubbles too! At this point if you just come in to the thread to repeat that you are afraid of obstruction/distraction/annoyance, you are just trying to make yourself heard while refusing to listen to others.
