so instead of the chatbox, a perfectly good chatbox, a perfectly good chatbox similar to ffxi.

you want chat bubbles to pop up over people's heads so you can read where the chat came from cause its that important to you. because you have to be looking at that player. because you want to be scoping out their character. because you have to know where that player is standing at that very moment, whether it be near or far.

so when you have a dozen people around you all chatting. all you see is chat bubbles?

I remember the Phantasy Star Online and Universe series of games doing this but has any other MMO? I cant recall any at the moment that I played and I've played more of them than most people thought even existed. Though maybe what I'm thinking of as chat bubbles is different than what others are picturing?

Oh well, was a worth a shot. I know players in-game have made off-the-cuff comments about wishing for chat bubbles, it does help with immersion - I know I'm not the only one. I guess this current crop of Forum Warriors are against it, but a few months back I found a thread where alot of people were asking for them. I was just trying to refresh some discussion on it but I guess all those people have probably left/moved onto another game, lol.

Celes_Chere, I have never run into that problem with past MMO's - ever. Alot of people project fears of chat bubbles but I've never seen it in my many years of MMO gaming. Plus an option to disable chat bubbles would fix your disdain.

theres a target function for player characters.

Most people have already turned off "Flying text" because of Bahamut & Odin, and not so much for S Marks but I have seen people disappear.

Now if you want to talk about the annoyances of chat bubbles. Trolls will use them to block others, to fill the screen with unnecessary chat and possibly profane words and images (ascii art) and run around spamming all day.

Seriously. NO THANKS. There can be no good from this. The bad outweighs any ounce of good that can come from chat bubbles.

Heres another example. you're in a Dungeon and your party member is trying to tell you something very important. They have to STOP for you to read it? God no. Or you so busy trying to read it when they're moving making it hard to read, you end up dead.

NO THANKS. If people were wanting in then, you and them clearly dont see all the bad that chat bubbles comes with.

They are ugly. I don't even like the chat bubbles that pop up from random NPCs talking nearby. (Even if the conversations are funny...) It's an eyesore. I've played games with chat bubbles before and it was just awful.

How do ugly, invasive, and screen-filling chat bubbles at all help with immersion in any way, shape, or forum, as opposed to a discrete chatbox in the corner of your screen that can take up as much or as little of it that you want.

Chat bubbles are literally the opposite if any type of immersion whatsoever.

It was mentioned in the beta forums along with a super-long list of other stuffs regarding whether stuff could be implemented or not, and chat bubbles were given a definitive "no".
