A player will go where it is most convenient for them. It is the developer's job to make each town as equally convenient as possible. The game revolves around items and groups. Players stay in Ul'dah because that is where people shout for groups, and sell the most goods. Nothing will get players out of Ul'dah unless the wards are connected (which is probably close to impossible without getting rid of retainers), and there is some kind of global chat between towns. The best you can do is move focus to another town, which doesn't solve anything. Making guildmarks only available in certain towns is merely an excursion. They only take about an hour to finish, to which you have to wait longer than a day to obtain more. Why would you still stay in that town once you've finished them?

Yes I do have a My Little Pony sig because I'm not a complete loser who lives in his own little world, proclaiming something is stupid because I say so.

It's no longer convenient when it's full, now is it? It is not SE's fault the players won't spread out. There are wards that are empty and people refuse to use them. This is a player and community issue, not a dev one. Nothing makes Ul'dah anymore convenient than Limsa or Grid. It's arbitrary to say one's better than another.

Ul'dah was selected, I think, because of its central location to everything. It's smack-dead in the middle of the two other cities, and you have Mor Dhona straight to the N.

Beyond that, it's circular, self-perpetuating behavior... The reason more people hang out in Ul'dah, is because more people hang out in Ul'dah...

When Ishgard is finally opened, assuming it's the "Jeuno" many assume it to be... I wouldn't be surprised to find that the mass of people head there instead and Ul'dah becomes just like the other two cities.

WHY stay there? So you don't have to waste your precious Anima returning there the next time you need to do more leves for guild marks. And you can always run around and fight mobs in the areas around Gridania and Limsa Lominsa, there's nothing to force you to do that in Ul'dah. Get the other players in your LS together to join you exploring other cities, and you may find things to do outside of Ul'dah. And it should take more than an hour to do your leves for guild marks, unless you're only doing 1 or 2 leves. You can take up a craft that is centered in that city also (and crafting takes up a lot more time, if you grind through it)
