People are being cruel to new players

This was my first MMORPG.. like... ever. So when I started, I had NO clue what people were talking about when they were speaking in lingo. My first few dungeons were a disaster, and it only made it worse when people were telling me what to do, using words that I didn't know.. and then getting mad when I wasn't doing it.
Obviously I picked it up and started getting better. But now I go into a dungeon and there'll be a newbie and they're terrible at their job, the first thing i do when someone starts getting irritated and demanding that they generate more enmity, is break it down for them. MAYBE they don't know what that means and why they need to do so.. because playing the game solo you don't need to worry about ANY of that.

My first time tanking was so horrible and the people were SO mean that I almost cried. And I'm still scared to play dungeons as a gladiator, even though I know what to do now.

Try to be helpful rather than hurtful.

If you don't understand what they are saying why didn't you tell them to explain ?

Because I play on ps4. I didn't have a keyboard at the time. Which made it worse, because they thought I couldn't see what they were writing.. Plus they weren't waiting for me when I did try to type out a message via the in-game keyboard, they just kept going.

Simple fix for no keyboard for ps4, you can use your USB keyboard you're using for your PC.

Did you take the time to go through your class quests before you started doing group content, OP?

Did you take the time to really read through the effects of the different abilities you acquire through leveling up before doing group content, OP?

Did you read through ALL the active help windows that would pop up frequently every time you did something new, OP?

Did you also explain to your party that you were new to any given run(you already pointed out you didn't have a keyboard and that you didn't, which is a huge foul)?

If you answered no to any of these questions, then you weren't being a responsible player, and it isn't the group's job to keep you up to speed when you show no indication of being considerate yourself.

MMOs are games of give and take. It's unfair to expect other players to go the extra mile for you(and more often than not they're more than willing to) if you can't do the same. Yes, it's a video game, but the relationships and social contracts are still very real. Once again, it's give and take.

Additionally, the duty finder is the "bottom of the barrel", lowest common denominator of group-finding mechanisms. You're going to find all kinds of players, and there are no rules other than need/greed lotting that are enforced by the game. You're essentially on your own. What I would recommend instead is to use the party finder, which allows you to set parameters for different types of content, including new player runs, no cutscene skipping, etc. Finally, if in situations where players DO engage in nasty harrasment(and they do), you can use the vote kick function(assuming the rest of the party is onboard) or you can report the player, and I guarantee that after enough reports(which particularly toxic players have more than a few usually), that player will change his or her tune. I'm not going to say there aren't asshats out there(that's unfortunately a large theme within the gaming community), and it sucks that you had to go through a nasty experience, but think realistically about what you could have also done to help the situation instead of pinning it on(either rightfully or otherwise) the other group members.

Given that you're a new player I don't expect you to even know about the Party Finder's existence, so I would suggest you look it up.

As another person said, you can't hold the group responsible all the time. Since you never said anything, they might have thought you were screwing with them if you were playing badly and might have been a troll. I'm actually very upset that SE never opted to bundle a keyboard with the console versions of the game, which could have helped to mitigate these communication problems.

another great example of being rude. And since when does a first time MMO player know that they need to be a "responsible" player, and look stuff up on it? It's a GAME. I repeat a GAME. Like buy, go home, and play. And you missed some parts. I'm not a new player anymore. I've been using the party finder every day, as well as the duty finder. I was just saying that my experience was a bad one and it could have been made better if other people weren't so RUDE.

now you know, from now on you need to have keyboard while play on ps4 at all time. Silence mean yes.

Most of the time, if a player is new and he/she say/type that he/she is new, ppl will teach him/her automatic. In this case it is not the other fault you got the blame but it is your fault for not having prepare the tool for communication, in other words the USB keyboard (and they are super cheap)

To be completely honest you're playing a game with other human beings, and you didn't bring an effective method of communication and you're suprised you had problems? I'm not saying they were right or that people in this game could use more patience, but you kind of set yourself up a little bit. Go buy a keyboard.

Agreed here. I think there are a lot of console players who think they can drop into this game like they would Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto and just start playing with no need for communication.

OP, until you get a keyboard you could try to make a macro with a few canned statements, Like the one I shared above. It should be rather simple to make a macro that just does a quick party chat message. I linked a site that helps you make macros. Hope this helps! Good luck!

/p Hi, new to MMO's so any advise is appreciated. Also, I have no keyboard so please be patient!

    or

/p Thanks for the run! I really appreciated your help, you guys ROCK!
