Legendary/Ascended share the same stats in GW2. While you have to clear more content for a Legendary Weapon, you can craft, or farm World Bosses for its Ascended equivalent. If you're specifically talking about the mats for some of the Gifts; why would you ever grind for them? Clear content, and buy what you need. The rest comes naturally ( map completion, dungeon specific Gifts, skill points etc ).

Gear in GW1 was not "the same as that at level 1." Suffixes and Prefixes, yes, but not the inherent armor rating, as it was different for each class and, increased naturally as you leveled-up acquiring better gear until you hit level cap. I'm not following on "the ridiculousness of glamour sets in gw1" thing either. There was no glamour system. There was a ton of different armors that were dyeable and were easily mix-and-matchable. And costumes, of course, but nothing as dumb as what GW2 and FFXIV:ARR has implemented ( few good-looking armor sets, and a handful of glamour options ).

As far as effort/reward; I enjoyed it. It's what kept me playing for those seven years. Dungeons/Missions were fun, end-game content was challenging enough, and PvP was extremely competitive ( for the first five years or so at least until PvE Title-seekers came in ). All with their own unique rewards. But, opinions.
