    Ranking/Leveling and FF Terminology

I think I am either too Analytical or lots of people like to make up their own terminology and hope everyone knows what they are talking about.

A lot of us have been playing FFXIV for quite a while now, a brand new MMO. We set out like we do in every MMO/RPG to do the same thing, "make our character better", so we started to gain those special points that you get for progressing your character. Now in FFXIV the developers decided to go a differant direction with character design. The ever famous "Armory System", basically the weapon/tool makes what you are. Its still the same principal from other games. Your weapon accumulates Skill Points. Where as your base character (typically a job) gains the Experience points. But it seems to be that a lot of people want to forget the terminology of this game and decide to use the same words they are so ever use to.
Your weapon does not gain experience points.
    You gain experience points.
It makes more sence to say we are Ranking up, since it is the rank we want, not the level so much, since the level is shared with every class.
In FFXI this was reversed but the same principal, Your Job made up who you were. You gained experience for your job, and skill points for your weapon. It seems pretty straight forward. I would imagine when they abolish the physical level, and add jobs, the jobs will gain the experience, while the weapon still continues to make the skill points.

Everytime someone says, "this exp is horrable", I reply, "why are you worried about exp? its SP that you want".

I think half of the player base understands this and the other half will just poke me for trying to educate them. Some people even get upset when I try to explain this.
Im not trying to make you feel inferior, im only trying to explain the terminology.

This terminology has been here since the beggining, I dont quite understand why everyone gets fixed on a certain term, when every new MMO is a new RPG waiting to be explored.

This goes along with the arguement of FFXIV vs XI. I frankly cant see any reason how XIV can ever be a clone of XI. Even if (like we all hope) SE brings a plethera of Final Fantasy-ness into the baron world of XIV, it will always be XIV.

Granted I would have loved to be able to EXP my Glad and SKILL UP many differant weapon that he could utilize to be an awesome fighter. Im still enjoying XIV and await to see whats in store around the corner. Its a vast world out there, (and when we get access to it) its gonna be hell of fun exploring.

Anyway I dont expect this to be a long rambling discussion full of arguements and bullcrap. Just thought id share my mind.

When they remove physical levels you will only be gaining experience points not skill points and ranks will become levels. So it will be fine if people want to use those terms then, and they will be correct in doing so. We will never be ranking up again we will be leveling up.

I hope with the removal of physical level, we get some kinda skill system ala FFXI (I know, another FFXI player wanting FFXI-2.. No) I was proud when I hit cap on guarding skill, and even more proud when I had MNK at 75 with merited and capped hand-to-hand, then started levelling PUP as if the job was powerful xD People were amazed at PUP's strength during my time from 1-75. I liked gaining all my skills separate that I could use with other jobs, but it won't happen.

FFXIV's system is basic right now, and they made a mistake of releasing the game already, they can't change anything major because the players will flip out and rage over their forums.

Players will QQ anyway. It doesn't matter any more at this point. Anything Yoshi-P says or does anymore will be a point of contention. It's time to get the major structural changes out of the way, painful or not.

*Puts on Skwisgaar Skwigelf mask* Permits me to dissagree.
If your weapon would gain Skill Points, then that means that if I give my weapon to another player, he would swing that axe with such dexterity and strength. This is not what it is now.
We are gaining Skill Points. Because our skill with the Axe has increased, not the Axe's.
Skill Points are the points that show our affinity to that weapon type. Experience Points are the points that show our character's being, and the more it rises, the more you can place attributes, the more you can customize your character.

If someone tells me "XP is horrible", I intend it as Experience Points anyway. When you gain points there is written how many Skill Points (SPs) and how many Experience Points (XPs) you're gaining, so if you're using the wrong terminology I just go on and say "Yeah, but how much is your SPs?", and if he doesn't know I just explain =)

    This right here.

I spend so much time, and had so much fun levelling all of the weapons my dark knight could use. Scythe, GS, swords, axes, clubs lol, etc.

Skill up parties, solo skilling up with my NPC companion (the one SE did mostly right in FFXI)

Not only did I have fun doing it, it gave me something Else to to, while fleshing out my then favourite job in a cool way.

    Now..... not so much luck.

This is the problem of the current localization. In Japan each weapons class is named "Weapon User" IE "Sword User" "Axe User" etc. of course its in japanese but thats not the point.

In English and other latin based localizations, they gave flare to those weapon names, and called them classes. So people want to confuse "Gladiator" with something like "Warrior" in XI or Wow, wanting to think it should be able to equip more then just swords. when its name literally means. "SWORD USER" "Gladius = Sword" "Ator = suffix meant to show user or practitioner" All the DoW classes are the same in that regard Except Marauder. Marauder is French Origin, and was a name given to the Francesca (A type of axe) users of the Franks as they ran about destroying the countryside.

To be honest, A LOT of the problems people have had with the armory system would have never exsisted if they simply called them the weapon they were, told people "Weapons give you skills, use them, gather skills, mix and match your skills to create your own job." had they said this up front and out right I dont think anyone would have ever complained about the armoury system.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
