I have a feeling 2.5's "primal" might be Omega. Omega's basically a bigger, badder version of Ultima, more primals have now been awoken for it to snack on, and yes, it has been put into the plot as of 2.3.

After that, we're onto new territory. Well, 'new' still involving Ascians, I'm sure.

I anticipate no new primals but instead actual clashes with Ascians.
Though Alexander seems likely as a primal post-3.0. The new expansion areas will likely have their own set of them, or completely focus on something like Alexander.
But I get the feeling we're ramping up for the Ascians and Zodiark. I imagine one of the final battles of the Ascian arc (which may be YEARS off) will be against all 12-ish of them simultaneously.

If zodiark becomes more prominent in the 3.0 story I could see them using the other zodiac summons as the new "primals". Cuchulain etc could be some fun fights

What about Ruby and Emerald Weapons from FFVII?
