I think you guys are getting me mixed up. I'll try and clarify:

    1) Right now all available quests are marked on your map...AND
    2) Once you start a quest there are markers and highlighted areas showing you where to go.

The exception to this rule is the "Greatest Secret" quest. This quest is:

    1) Marked as an available quest on your map...BUT
    2) Once accepted there are no markers or highlighted areas to show you where to go.

What I am asking for is:
    1) A quest that is NOT marked as available on your map...BUT
    2) Once accepted, there are markers and highlighted areas to show you where to go.

    I am NOT asking for:
    1) A quest that is not marked as available on your map...AND
    2) Once accepted, there are no markers and highlighted areas to show you where to go.

The only "secret" part is obtaining the quest. Some people will just look up everything online, but I think there are a large amount of players (like myself) who will be more than happy to stumble across it accidentally.

    P.S. That comic is funny

Well, just because people will look it up online doesn't mean that it shouldn't be added. Otherwise what is the point of the Sightseeing Log or the "Greatest Secret" quest? A lot of people will always want to do it themselves, and this is the perfect game since it brings in a crowd that is a little more laid back (see: endless threads about whether to look up endgame fights beforehand or not).

Could also help curb that aspect by making certain aspects of the spawn randomly generated for each player. For instance, maybe for one player it needs to be raining and the NPC shows up in Gridania, or it needs to be foggy and the NPC will show up in Limsa Lominsa.

I just think it would be nice if we were rewarded (or could be) by talking to the NPC present in the world, because a lot of them are interesting, and it'd be nice to see other players interacting with the general NPC population. It would also encourage people to walk/run/ride places because they could talk to people along the way. The people who will just look stuff up aren't going to be contributing to the exploration of the open-world anyway because they are more focused on the destination not the journey.

That's not the same thing at all, the Greatest Secret quest tells you what to do, it's not a secret quest, it's a riddle quest. If the NPC would be complaining out loud that he has a problem then why not ( but then it's the same as putting a big ! above their head ), but
Now imagine if it didn't show up on the map and you had to speak with him during a heat wave (perhaps the heat drove off his friends ^_^).
Would be just stupid, it would be just luck to speak to the good NPC at the good time or something.

-- A secret quest would also tell you what to do.

Again, the only secret part is that the quests aren't marked on the map. And I'm not talking about "DEFEAT LEVIATHAN" quests, I'm talking about like, "I lost my pets!" or "Craft me some boots!"
