Hehe, I was on Midgard in FFXI from the beginning of 05 til it was merged with Quetzalcoatl in 2010. I started FFXIV 1.0 on Ridill (or rather, it's predecessor Selbina) though which I've stayed on in the changeover to ARR. Hopefully more FFXI Midgard players will start playing!![]()
I was on Bismarck in FFXI, mained RDM and DNC, I really wish XIV had those jobs lol. Started XI in 2007 or 2008 and played fairly regularly until my buddies quit after about a year or two. Played on and off through last year (and by on and off, I mean after 1 or 2 months sub I'd take like a 3-6 month break. I last played last October). As for XIV, I got 1.XX fairly late (probably around 1.15. Got the CE for $30 lol, was totally worth it). Made my character on Wutai, then to Balmung he went. I probably only played 2 hours at most of 1.XX, my laptop couldn't handle it. Been playing ARR since launch (minus a couple months that I hadn't subbed). Made a new guy on Coeurl since my friends and brother couldn't get on a legacy server at launch.
FFXI is gonna have a free week from Sept. 10-17I'm gonna hop back on for that free time. Thinking about getting Seekers of Adoulin since it's gonna be $5, but I don't know... I love FFXI, but I always paid with those Ultimate Pay cards, and since they're shutting down (and nowhere in my area sells them anymore) I probably won't get it. SE needs to put out Crysta Cards >.>

I am so glad to see other XI players! I miss the great times I had on that game! Would love to hop back on for the free time, but I don't even think I have my info anymore.
Lol I had no idea they merged servers on XI. I changed over to WoW about 2007-ish because I just didn't have the time for XI anymore. I still play WoW, just completely board with it.
So, here I am trying the 14 day on XIV. I love the fact that is reminds me so much of XI, but I am hoping that it is less of a time sink. I still game quite a bit, just not like back in the old days.
I am going to give this a go. I mostly wanted to "see" the game before I started looking into servers/classes/races ect. I will probably re-roll now that I have more of a feel for it and have done some research.
Any suggestions? I loved my RDM on XI, but also my RNG. I would also love a server that was active with maybe a couple more social end linkshells (or w/e they are called now lol)
This is much less of a time sink, you WILL NOT be camping anything for 3+ hours and it doesn't take 30 minutes to an hour to run from Gridania to any other city lol. You also get your own personal chocobo at around level 20 for quicker travel, can call it at any time if the zone doesn't restrict summoning it. Plus the aetherites offer very quick zone travel, so make sure to attune to them =p
Though for doing dungeons in the game you would want at the very least 30 minutes to do it (because if everyone knows the place in and out and is super overgeared they can burn through it, other times there are new players such as yourself and may require a bit more time). The time sink for damage dealing roles is also relatively long, especially for ranged jobs (bard, black mage, and summoner). Each dungeon "low level" dungeon requires 1 tank, 1 healer, and 2 damage dealers. Since DDs (or DPS as they're colloquially called in this game) are the most populous, it takes the longest.
As for a job to choose, you can try them all like in XI if you decide not to change servers! =p At level 10 you can get access to other classes after doing your level 10 class quest for the one you chose first. Each class and job have their strengths and drawbacks so it really depends on what's favorable to you. The battle system is much different than XI, so it's really hard to choose unless you're just like "I wanna (do damage/heal/tank) in general!"
Just a quick rundown of the game's jobs: Monk has the highest damage output in long fights, BLM and DRG have the best burst damage, SMN is the DoT master, and BRD can be mobile and attack at the same time at a large distance. WHM has the biggest heals, SCH has great damage mitigation on it's heals. PLD has the best defensive skills and a shield to mitigate even more damage, WAR has the highest HP and has an easier time holding hate than PLD.
Personally, my favorite job in this game is White Mage, which is saying something because main healing was a job I loathed in XI, I hated main healing almost as much as being forced to refresh/haste only. The reason I also mained DNC in XI was because I wouldn't be forced into a strict healing and buffing situation like RDM would get in. Healing is more fun in this game, and people don't get insanely mad when the healer attacks the mobs as well lol. I started the game and played through the whole story as an Archer/Bard. It's a really fun job, but after trying WHM I completely jumped over. Something about WHM in this game just got me hooked to the job lol.
And as for servers, I think the most populated ones are the ones with the most well known names like Gilgamesh and Behemoth (also Balmung, which is one of the two unofficial RP servers). The server I'm on is less populated than others I think, but it's still pretty active. As for social free companies and linkshells (FC is like a guild in WoW from what I understand, linkshell is pretty much the same as in FFXI. You can have both! And up to 8 LS's at once). If anything you could just make a character on the servers to scout the community out and see you would want to be on it. You can make 1 character per server on the cheaper payment option, and 8 per server for the standard sub. Can go crazy with characters lol.

I was on Midgardsormr, my character's name was Wolfen and after it merged with Quetzalcoatl I lost my name (changed to Makenshi)
I haven't played XI in awhile but was in Gumdrops and WeSH linkshells, I might jump on it during the free week though![]()
