Uninstall completely, delete your FFXIV file out of My Games (can be found in my documents), reinstall from finalfantasyxiv.com/playersdownload/na (the "na" will be "eu" or "jp" depending on your region)

Quick fix: Try just deleting the folder first, then start up the game

I just wanted to chime in, I just got this error as well. Game worked fine yesterday. It downloaded a very small update today, then when loading the start screen I got a BSOD, followed by this error every time I tried to restart afterward. Removing the folder in My Games didn't help.

I'm reinstalling now, and taking forever. I've downloaded patches at 14MB/s before, it's running around 3MB right now.

BSOD is usually an issue with your RAM, power supply, or graphics card. Has nothing to do with version check issue.

Another thing OP can try is forwarding ports

    Ports are:

    TCP
    54992 - 54994
    55006 - 55007
    55021 - 55040
