amazing idea. i hope devs see this and implement it within a year or so. it would make gathering not so bland and boring... (no, materia crafting won't solve that). It's just a stone's throw away.
As I recall, the only action you can take in fending yourself off from foes is the use of "Throw Stone". Gee, that's really going to save your life. (/sarcasm) So in light of this, I propose a cute pet familiar to assist you in your gathering endeavors.
-----------------
Botanist
Mandragora - This little guy will pummel and scream at foes. His special will put them to sleep. Upon gathering, he will alert you of hidden gathering locations as well as get excited when there is a rare item nearby.
How to obtain:
You are sent out on an herb gathering quest when you spot a strange root...
Miner
Spriggan - Spriggan will bite and knock into foe to force them into submission. His special is quick chant, which will cast the corresponding magic to the precious gem he is holding.
How to obtain:
You are sent out on a mining quest when you mine up more than you can handle...
Fisher
Apkallu - Apkallu pecks and growls at foes. His special move is (i dont know make a suggestion) Apkallu will occasionally dive into the water and retrieve a fish that got away. He gets excited when there are rarer fish in the water.
How to obtain:
You are sent out on a fishing quest when something unexpected comes up with your catch...

Instead of a pet, how about a "gatherer" NPC like a retainer. You call them, they teleport in, give you the items, and teleport away.
No one expects the miquote inquisition!!!
I like the idea. Gathering is bland in every game. This would be new and interesting.

I had the same thoughts about a companion as well but with a chocobos.
When you are raising a chocobo you can bring it out gathering with you on what ever DoL you want to teach it. It would watch you do your gathering and get points for that DoL. It could get skill or traits that would benefit the person while gathering. The chocobo could carry extra supplies or be an extra storage place for your items. It could even gather things its self on occasion.
You could customize the chocobo to your liking. For instance if you a fisher have it show the chocobo carrying a extra rod, net, bait box, fish, etc. Maybe depending on the the most dominant DoL you trained it in, the appearance of the chocobo would change. For example a chocobo with high points in fishing might have a beak that is a lot longer and narrower then a normal chocobo to help it catch fish.
That is my idea.
( Yes my examples are mostly fishing things but that's because i like it the best (O.o)/ )

That is an amazing idea, having a companion while gathering sounds awesome, this npc would not do much besides comic relief and helpful hints on gathering spots~

I would love this ^_^ It sounds adorable, and I love mandys and having one follow me around helping as I logged or harvested would be awesome ^_^

I'm grateful for such positive feedback. Ohh devs where are you! Its time to come out and play ;D

I believe the community reps that would take your suggestions to the dev team do not work during weekends ;p. You would have to wait till monday. and even then pacific coast time ^^;

Lmao I thought of that earlyer. ._.
Ah well, even I wouldnt wanna work on the weekends eh?

I really like this idea, this kind of companion would make gathering classes more appealing to everyone. Making the pet show the way to a node instead of the vage system that we have now would be really welcome.
Keeping the pets as a mere tool to help the DoL and not to use in battle would prevent it from being exploited in some way by a leveling party.
