Colouring my Chocobo...what am I doing wrong?

So when it says 6 hours I shouldn't feed it again but it only randomly actually changes? Because I've been through this twice now with the waiting

feed it as much as you want to, when it says that it grows new feather it means that it will change after the 6 hours, if it says it again it mean that it will be another color, etc...
