    The first time you read Catcher:

    A) You read Catcher in the Rye and at the end you find out something about the character that changes your perception of him.

    B) You read the last few pages of Catcher, then read the book armed with knowledge about the character you otherwise wouldn't have.

    If you get the parts out of order it changes the way you put together the whole..


    Imagine knowing the truth about Darth Vader before you watched A New Hope... Q Q those poor kids that saw Episode I II and III before IV V and VI...


    So yeah. Even if you get the "whole" story - the way the story is interpreted changes based on the order in which you get the parts.



    As a story teller - a linear narrative is pretty important. Not that FFXIV: ARR is entirely linear... thanks Echo! etc.

    Either way - retcons and inconsistencies are messy.
