FFXI is a bad comparison. It was more of a hardcore game where that kind of stuff was appropriate.
FFXIV is much more casual and I can't see them following this. I will be very surprised if you can't just start a new character as a rogue. And I really hope they do let you start as a Rogue. I have a couple friends that are interested because of the short NIN gameplay video, I don't think they'd be interested in starting as anything else.Read harderIt already does.
In XIV you can't unlock jobs unless you hit level 30 - Them releasing new classes and jobs post launch would still make sense to have you unlock the class as you're progressing. It's just like all previous iterations of XIV - you could start as any, but you later would have to do quests to unlock them. You couldn't even switch classes until you did quests/storyline in ARR, unlike XI where all you had to do was go to your mog house from the get go and just switch.
So if your friends wouldn't be interested in anything else, that's tough, as unlike XI, you have to level x,y classes to get the job - in XI having certain subs made sense but were in no way a requirement to even unlock.
