Couple of questions.(Checking the game out after quitting for a long period)

Is the game still free to play?
And are they seriously going to charge for having more than 1 toon?

I really don't plan on sticking with the game but those two questions are my biggest concerns. But trying to get info for a couple that might want to try

Yes, it's still F2P. I don't know what it's like atm, but once they start charging, they will presumably charge for extra character slots. Seeing as you can level everything on one character, however, I'm not sure why this would be a problem.

I've been messing around with the account settings and there is a disclaimer of being charged for the additional toons but maybe I am not understanding it correctly.
but as for the issue of wanting multiple characters I just personally don't enjoy doing everything on one toon(I would get bored very quickly of that toon) I just like to have different characters for different needs,game styles, and looks. Plus if they are charging for the extra toons while the game is still f2p I would just be against it.

It works just like FFXI: there's a normal monthly fee for the first character (~$15?) and an additional monthly fee for each additional character (~$2?). However, due to the state of the game at release, they haven't charged any monthly fees yet. When the game is more satisfactory, and it's definitely getting there with 1.18, they will start charging, but there will be plenty of warning when the monthly fees are going to start.

The game is meant to be played on one character. If that's going to be an issue for you, then I don't know what to tell you. Being able to play every class on the same character is one of my favorite things about FFXI and FFXIV. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have the same issue with the characters as the OP. Never been a fan of FFXI/FFXIV's character system. I likes me some (a lot) of alts. For now though it doesn't cost anything. Who knows, maybe they'll change it so people whom don't like jack-of-all-trades characters and have bad altitis won't have to pay $100 a month?

100$? It comes out to more like $25 give or take or a buck, if you have all your character slots activated. Hardly bank breaking.

Until you consider having two accounts with maximum number of characters, and another account with the maximum number of characters for my girlfriend. :P Not $100 but it's pretty damn close.

Well at that point at least if you want to have atleast 2 different toons it would still be the same price as most MMOs. Of course, thats if the initial monthly fee is only 12.95 like i think it is =P
