However, when I log in to Mogry Station, the information that I am a licensed PS4 player is there, so again: What does the PS4 client need PSN for at all? Why not make it so that PSN is only needed for initial registration, but not afterwards?

P.S.: Just thought of another reason: Checking whether an updated client is available. However, the check is so trivial that it could be done with SE's servers using minimal overhead, and the PC version does not need any servers from Sony, Microsoft, Steam etc. at all to achieve this.
Im with you on this. Once your account is registered and authenticated, I dont see why connecting to psn is necessary. As a subscription based game its not necessary to be a ps+ subber on ps4 to play. I can understand the need to connect to psn for future expansions, or dlc, but for everyday logging in it would be nice if psn can be bypassed on days its down for maintenance, or for events like yesterday.
