Well I used to run a game server online and are very familiar with DDOS attacks. Whats going on now is most likly a UDP spoof attack thats being filter, the problem is they dont have the sufficient protection to filter it properly (which is what the DDOSers claims is the reason for the attack) so what happens is while filtering out the zombie IPs they also take down most of the legit connections. DDOS protection on the network level that sony has is very very expensive but I cant believe they didnt have it in place. I hope SE is learning from this and looking into their own protection and be prepared if this should happen to them. It doesn't take a genius and a fortune to perform a DDoS attack today and therefore it is a very real threat on the internet.
