I love how the non-tech muppets in here think Sony could do anything about this by simply throwing money at it. The point where the bottle neck is occurring is not in or near Sonys network. The "partners" they talk about when posting about work being done to fix this are the backbone ISP providers. If you're going to get mad at any one - don't. The people behind this would like nothing more than for you to get mad at them. Be like Applejacked, just ignore them or make fun of them (or both), but be a chill bro while you're doing it

Having an opinion does not make you right or wrong, it simply means you have an opinion. Don't get irritated when people don't agree.

Some of the fault could lie with sony, though. The person who hacked them said he was able to do so because they allow modded ps4s running custom firmware to log in to PSN. The same group has tried unsuccessfully to do the same to MS's servers but XBL hasn't been reported as having the kind of service outages that PSN users are experiencing. Food for thought.

You might be right, but as with anything else, there's no reason for people to be jerks about it. To demand perfection is to demand the impossible.

Agreed about the being a jerk part. It does kind of irk me though that a huge company like Sony, given their track record with handling attacks from hackers, still seems to be less proactive and more reactive when it comes to protecting their servers.

We don't know what's going on behind the scenes though. I'm sure what measures they use stop lots of attacks, we just only hear about it when one gets through. Its like being in the lawn care business and mowing a yard of grass, but you miss one and that's the one that the client chooses to notice and not the hundreds of thousands that you perfectly cut.

They weren't hackers, though. There was no information compromised. A DDoS attack is different and many companies have been disrupted by one. I may think a lot of things about Microsoft's $400-$500 paperweight, but they did handle the situation much better. At the same time, it's also worthwhile to note that Sony was targeted first AND there was a warning earlier today towards MS, so they probably had time to prepare.

Yes, we all know by now there is a difference between hacking and a DDoS. And no, they were attacked very close together. The group was attacking many different companies and most of them got their shit together quite quickly, whereas Sony has been having outages all this time. From Blizzard to MS, they were under attack at roughly the same time and rebounded. The reason Sony is being thrown around in the news is because they're the ones that are slow to alleviate the issue.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything but, M$ has never had this problem. I remember when PSN was down for over a month back in 2011 (i found the actual date), the xbox live service ran smooth as ever. And don't tell me to move to Microsoft, because the reason I´m with Sony is FF, so dont give me a sassy, smartass answer.
And like somebody already said, you would expect a company like Sony to have an IT team capable of fixing almost anything in 18 hours.
I´m just upset about the fact that I can't play, and for the looks of it, won't be able to in a very, very long time...PSN membership and SE membership gone to waste.

Xbox Live was brought down in January from a DDoS attack.

What happened to Sony in 2011 resulted in accounts being compromised. A DDoS attack is not that, and it's not easy to defend from one when it happens randomly.

Yeah, and many people don't realize what actually happens during a DDoS, even if the victim company drops or reroutes all the bad data, that bad data is STILL going through the pipes, choking them.
