I'm sure Squeenix would prefer this but Sony even going back to the PS2 has had requirements for network authentication (DNAS on PS2) in order to verify your console, the game software etc. If FFXIV wasn't a game there wouldn't be a problem. Netflix etc. get around it because they're a service. I think the only way FFXIV could get classed as a "service" instead of a game is if the game software itself was free. That would negate any need for software authentication by Sony. I can remember a lot of DNAS issues playing XI on PS2 for a long while.
