Its pretty here in VA as well. And I am attempting to log into the PSN and it won't let me. I don't understand why is it taking Sony so log to fix this.

Combatting a DDoS attack is effectively futile. The things which you can do on the receiving end are filter out illegal protocolos or packets, however most common DDoS attacks use legit protocols and packets (packets regular clients would also send over the regular protocol). So the second thing you can do on the receiving end is open up more bandwidth. But this can easily be countered by increasing the number of systems performing the DDoS attack. And additionally, bandwidth is finite.

So commonly the countermeasures have to rely on getting the sending end to stop. The source has to be traced, and e.g. the ISP has to be contacted to stop sending. With attacks such as these usually coming from botnets with infected systems spread out all across the globe, it's an uphill battle.
