Off-topic; anyone else here like the idea of a side-scrolling Final Fantasy game?

I don't know why, but as I was playing through Final Fantasy III (DS/PSP remake) the other night, I was thinking how cool a side-scrolling Final Fantasy game could be. Made in the same vein as something like Castlevania, maybe you unlock new characters (each based on a different iconic Job), kind of an Action-Platformer with some RPG elements thrown in?

Not that it *needs* to happen, it just seems like it could be a cool way to delve into a new genre, while also leveraging some nostalgia. If you had tons of repeatable-dungeons, sort of like Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, but more RPG-elements like in Order of Ecclesia, it seems like something that would be a blast.

Not to mention, adding "secret characters" from other games in the franchise could definitely draw some serious attention. Who wouldn't buy a side-scroller in which you could unlock Cloud Strife, even if it was DLC?

Just saying; it's an idea. I'd buy a game like that!

Darn, was hoping this would be along the lines of Tales of Phantasia. This sounds nice too I guess, as long as Cloud wasnt in it.

games like those can be quite fun.
I haven't played many games, but I did play one (it's an MMO so I believe it's against the rules to mention it) and it was a side scrolling game that was fun *-* Only quit because leveling got way too repetitious lol
Having a final fantasy themed one would be interesting to at least try.
I actually still need to play tactics again too, that was also really fun.

Or like this, If sega had just kept this formula they would of had one of the best franchises but they screwed up with the neo/exa and shining soul series. I always thought this game was the greatest. If Square enix did something like this with their universe it was be epic. it also had a second look you could get through a promotion system that gave you better ability's looks and new title. example swordsman Prom. Hero.

Graphics aren't everything just a clean 2D top play with characters and fighting like a chess board and bosses. regular monsters big giants story only if Sega would had made Shining force 4 like shining force 2

Square enix could make something similar to this and it would rock, Disgaea does this and success even final fantasy tactics but it has to be for console not handheld.

which reminds me Shining Force 2 had a kraken fight also.

Eh, like I said; I would consider "Metroidvania" games to be my favorite genre, so the idea of something along those lines with Final Fantasy characters/jobs sounds particularly exciting to me. Just add some RPG elements -- leveling up, acquiring rare-drops from enemies, that sort of thing -- and either have a ton of characters, or one character who can change Jobs, and you'd have something insanely addictive, I would think.

And yeah, they could totally add "secret characters" to unlock, from previous FF games. I just wouldn't make them central to the story itself, though.

side scrolling implies platformer, so... maybe as a toy chest mini game.

I once had an idea like this. It would work more of a Metroid type game where you find new job crystals that grant new abilities. THF would give you an ability to jump higher, or maybe do a double jump. I don't know what the other jobs could do for you. The stats you gain when you level up depend on the job crystal equipped. Max level is achieved only by maxing all of the jobs.
