The next update will be a carry-over from Novus. For example if you have picked Crit+Det, your upgraded relic will still be Crit+Det type weapon. They'll probably both be iLvl.115, but with comparably different stats. For example, DRG Relic has a chunk load of accuracy, while non-Relics typically have a chunk load of Determination. Both Liberator and High Allagan Spear work this way.
(After looking at the High Allagan Spear's stats, all I can say is DO WANT)
And thus if 2.38 does bring it to at least IL115, it will indeed be better than HA, if you built your Novus optimally.

I would be ok with going back to more skill based challenges for relics rather then grinds similar to how relics were when the quest started. Where you had to beat all the hard mode primals which weren't exactly easy when the game came out.
Personally I much rather have a quest line that requires beating all 4 bosses in 2nd coil (beat each 2nd coil boss with relic quest active get 4 key items turn them in to go from novus to 115 relic) and less super grind stuff. If you are good at boss fights you can get done in an hour, but if you aren't as skilled it could take longer.
I still have yet to see the HA sword drop from T9 because all we get or books and axes.
It would be a bit silly to require players to beat the coil parts; if they are going to the coil anyway, they might as well just roll for their HA weapons there and drop their relics.

doing coil doesn't guarantee you the HA weapon you want and it can only be done once a week.

You need a weapon for doing coil which is why I did relic. Saying you should drop your relic and get HA isn't right at all. I killed T9 many times and it hasn't dropped. You can't just go in and get HA its very much left up to RNG its a 1 in 9 chance once a week. Odds are high you might not even get your weapon before 2.4 is out. 2 people in my FC never saw their weapon drop from T5 before 2nd coil was out. We are having way worse luck with T9 so many of the same weapons keep droping.
Going to be 1 out of 10 come October so I will most definitely do relic lol. I beat coil 9 twice (still young) War and PLD weapons drop. Knowing my luck I probably won't see the Scholar book because I beat T5 plenty of times and haven't seen it once. So it might be the sameYou need a weapon for doing coil which is why I did relic. I was ignoring the relic at first, doing the alexandrite farm veeery casually. Then after 12+ T9 clears and no scholar books (and me still using a level 100 weapon, 'cause I don't like the soldiery book) I decided to rush and complete my Novus in order to have at least a decent weapon for the future update. I wish SQUEX gave a token instead of a direct drop for T9 weapons. My team has 2 players with 3 weapons and 3 players with no weapon at all. We got 5x blackmage staffs, 2x axes, 2x spears, 1x bow, 2x monk weapons (with no monks in our static).Going to be 1 out of 10 come October so I will most definitely do relic lol. So 4 out of 8 players are still missing their mainjob weapon (Paladin, Scholar, Summoner, White Mage).
RANT RANT RANT RANT

I hope they add in speciality bonuses such as choose one or another option IE: Increase Jump damage by 25% or Decrease jump CD by 10 sec, you get the idea?
