Who else would like to see a Mystic Quest cameo-appearance? ^_^

I know that most people don't consider it a "real" Final Fantasy game, but honestly, it's always held a special place in my heart. It just hit me in the perfect circumstances, as I was just learning how to read, and I'd never played a turn-based game before, and I loved music anyways... I was basically the perfect "target audience".

I know that Lightning's visit was definitely a more high-profile event, but I'd still very much love to see Benjamen and Tristam visit Eorzea. For one, it fits perfectly; at the end of Mystic Quest, Benjamen and Tristam set towards... nobody really knows. Having their ship dock in Limsa Lominsa would e a perfect segway to introducing them, even as a brief cameo-appearance.

Of course, you've gotta have something for the non-fans, as well, and who wouldn't love the following ideas?

    - New "Bone Dungeon", inspired by the first dungeon in Mystic Quest, but with an orchestral rendition of the "Battle Theme" playing, and the famous "Boss Battle Theme" for, you guessed it, the Boss battle!

    - New Emote: "Shrug"

    - New Hairstyles: A "Messy Fauxhawk" for Males, and a long over-the-shoulder braid and tiara for Females (the latter, inspired by both Phoebe's and Kaeli's hairstyles, put together)

    - New Glamour items: The "Mystic Knight" armor (based on the US box-art), a "Dragon's Claw" fist-weapon, "Excalipoor" sword, the "Bow of Grace", and the massive "Giant's Axe".

So, here's the scenario I would personally envision:

You start by heading to Limsa Lominsa. You find that a new ship arrived, one from "far away", and the only two crew-mates departed in separate directions. You find Tristam near Ul'dah, up to his usual treasure-hunting antics. He's discovered the strangely-familiar Bone Dungeon in the deserts of Eastern Thanalan, but he doesn't think it has the treasure he's looking for, so he leaves it to use adventurers to take on.

At the same time, Benjamen will randomly appear in new FATEs near Gridania, with Slimes and Goblins spawning before a massive "Minotaur" boss shows up, at which point Benjamen shows up to aid players. As with Lightning, beating these FATEs would award items to exchange for the new temporarily-available Glamour items, whereas the Dungeon itself would remain even after this event (because who would spend time working on a Dungeon, and not leave it in the game?).

...So yeah, I know that's probably putting *WAY* too much expectation on a cross-over appearance by a character from a game that most people seem to generally despise, but honestly, you can't tell me it doesn't have some of the best music around! And honestly, I just think it would be really cool to see Benjamen brought back to life after all these years, even if just for a passing reference.

    Hell, why not.

The nonsensical, non-canon easymode FF game had its charms. The only trouble is like mmmmaybe 1% of the populace is gonna recognize what the hell is going on.

Then again, it's not like too many more NA players understood what the Dragon Quest stuff was all about.

    Sums up my feelings!

I enjoyed Mystic Quest as a kid, it would be a fun nostalgia trip. A minion like the warriors of light/onion knight would be a perfect reward, one with a grappling hook dragon claw!

I could get behind this. Mystic Quest IS recognised as part of the series now, spinoff or no (There's at least one track from it in the shortly-to-be-released-in-NA Theatrhythm Curtain Call, and the main character is playable). It might have been ultra simplistic but it also had a couple things quite unique in its design, and I'd be okay with a homage area.

I would definitely like this. I always felt that for how easy and short it was, the game was a fun romp with great music and gameplay ideas. Seriously, I can't think of a single other FF game where the monsters will visibly become more injured as the fight goes on.

I would be all over this if they made this happen. I loved that game as a kid, gameplay, music, characters and all. No clue why it got hit on so hard as the game was designed to be an intro RPG for American players back in the day, so of course it was going to be easy. Though even to this day I still get a slight shiver down my spine hearing Doom Castle theme play, just pure awesome.

Edit - Doom Castle theme Bask in its 16-bit glory. I mean come on that was pretty damn good for SNES era.

I see absolutely no reason why we can't have a "Burgeoning Dread"-style cameo for Mystic Quest. Especially with the new Theatrhythm acknowledging its existence.

I mean, I'm not jumping for joy because I never played it (SMRPG was my gateway drug into RPGs), but I see absolutely nothing wrong with the idea either.

How is Mystical Quest "non-canon" if all FFs are separate from each other (besides the sequels within certain games like IV, VII, X)?

Because it was a spin-off title made under the auspices of Square's now long defunct American division (even though the game was actually programmed in Japan) that was designed purely to appeal to children/those new to RPGs.

Most 'true' FF fans have long been cynical about the game, given it's ridiculously easy gameplay and ulterior motives for release - basically the US and Europe got the dumbed-down Mystic Quest instead of FFV on the SNES because marketing gurus thought FFV 'was too hard for Western audiences'. But I digress...

On topic, there is already at least one reference to Mystic Quest in ARR - a Coerthas sidequest involves having to capture a lost sheep called 'Benjamin', which may or may not be named after FFMQ's main protagonist. But I like to think it is.
