Following someone's previous recipe for soot black, I fed my chocobo the following combination:

21x Berries 7x Apples 7x Pears

This was the first stage in the process which should have yielded Plum Purple 6 hours later. Instead, it yielded Ceruleum Blue.

I believe there is some RNG to this process and trying to nail down an exact science may be out of reach. I'll be happy if I am wrong.

Seeing as you're doing lots of loops near where I'm trying to get to, I'd like to ask: My plan has been to follow the Chocobo Color Planner chart from this thread from Desert Yellow to Grape Purple. Once I get to Blood Red, from your experiments in that color area, what do you think is the safest first-guess path through Dalamud Red and Rolanberry Red to Grape Purple? Just berries, berries, pear as the chart suggests and let you guys know if it goes awry?

Might be a bit late seeing this. If you went straight apples to Blood Red, two stages of berries should get you Dalamud Red then Rolanberry Red. I haven't personally gone to Grape Purple, but everything I look at says Pears at Rolanberry to get to Grape Purple. You might hit Wine Red in between, which is something I'm trying to confirm as soon as I make it back to Rolanberry. If you do hit Wine Red, just keep going with Pears.

so trying to get rolanberry red, I fed berries to my chocobo when it was dalamud red, and instead it went straight to Regal Purple Now trying a combo of valfruit and apples to get back to red.

That's entirely possible since Regal Purple is VERY close to Rolanberry. I hit Rolanberry my first time through. This time I landed on Regal Purple myself (which may be due to my valfruit feed before).
I just fed mine a single apple which proc'd the new feather message. Hopefully that puts back to Rolanberry in 6hrs.

Going to join the fray here and post each step of my progress from Desert Yellow to Grape Purple (one new feathers message from one fruit type at a time). Hopefully I can help corroborate the findings so far, and if something goes horribly awry, hopefully you'll at least be able to help meh fix it!

Notes: This stage is a little strange if one assumes that the raw RGB values are of worth, here. From Pumpkin to Sunset, the green decreases as expected, but the red decreases and the blue increases? From an apple? SE's values must be a little different if this is true. Also, another 12 apples down. Doubt I'll make it from sunset (assuming I get sunset) to blood in just 9 from my first planting. <sad meh>

Uh, oh. It took me fifteen berries to get a "New Feathers" message from Dalamud Red, which leads me to believe that I might overshoot my target of Rolanberry and fall into the Regal loop. If I do this, I'd like to try to avoid going backwards due to the number of people who get caught in the loop ... but I also haven't seen a very good alternative that takes you around it. Bahhh... gonna need to grow some more apples...

Not really.. My first time through it took 17 to hit Rolanberry, then 1 more next stage to hit Regal. But they're still ridiculously close.
