This will be my initial, and ultimate, test to prove my theory.

My first test of this theory:
Shadow Blue » Soot Black
RGB(49, 49, 64) » RGB(37, 35, 30)
Difference: Red: -12, Green: -14, Blue: -34

Feed the following to change to your desired colour:
2 × Berries, 4 × Pears, 4 × Apples

Result was Loam Brown RGB(56, 45, 35)

Next step:
Loam Brown » Soot Black
RGB(56, 45, 35) » RGB(37, 35, 30)
Difference: Red: -19, Green: -10, Blue: -5

Feed the following to change to your desired colour:
2 × Apples, 3 × Pears, 3 × Berries

Result: still open

for those looking to get wine red but still have not next time you get to Dalmund red just add a few darken green and darken blue about 2 or three of each should do it once you get to dalmund red you do not need any more darken red.

I didn't see this yesterday..
It really can't be that simple after several people have been bumping around in this area for a week and still haven't found it. That really smells like it'll just put you back in the Regal Purple Pit.

Don't Worry, it's still on Black. I haven't fed it Apples YET. I'm pondering what to do.

I inadvertently proved my own Soot Black theory right (from these 3 posts). My First Post with all my experimentation recorded in it.

Here is the summary from Rolanberry Red. Keep in mind I always stop feeding after the first New Feathers message.

Rolanberry Red + 3 Pears > Regal Purple
Regal Purple + 8 Pears > Bark Brown
Bark Brown + 1 Apple > Regal Purple
Regal Purple + 1 Pear > Bark Brown
Bark Brown + 2 Pears > Mud Green
Mud Green + 2 Berries > Charcoal Grey
Charcoal Grey + 1 Apple > Loam Brown
Loam Brown + 1 Apple > Russet Brown
Russet Brown + 3 Apples > Rust Red
Rust Red + 1 Berries > Russet Brown
Russet Brown + 1 Berries > Rolanberry Red
Rolanberry Red + 1 Pear > Russet Brown
Russet Brown + 3 Pears > Raisin Brown
Raisin Brown + 1 Berries > Loam Brown
Loam Brown + 2 Berries > Soot Black

Notice from Charcoal Grey on... I fed 5 Apples, 5 Berries, 4 pears total. Hit a grey color, alternate a different deepening fruit every stage and just keep getting darker.

Screw it. I'm taking my bird out of the stables. Going to keep the black, at least for a little while. I've got other characters on this server. I may lvl up one to get another chocobo to experiment on. My retainers are screaming at me from being loaded with crap gear I need to turn in for seals in the new FC.

I've been working on mapping out the dyes in a color wheel fashion. My colors are from a color picker (Colour to HTML), and the were taken from my character dye window.

You are welcome to make a copy for yourself to play with- I'm guessing it should be able to be saved to your own Google Drive like spreadsheets are.

I have the same idea that a color wheel would be the best after I saw the one for Guild War 2 ^^

So I thought I'd throw in my own experiments, been focusing on trying to see if I can get any other intense colors in the yellow and red area, going from Honey Yellow.

I managed to get to Millcorn Yellow from Honey with 2-3 Valfruit. I got back to Honey yellow with a single Pineapple (wasn't expecting that). I wanted to push boundaries a bit, so I fed thirteen Pineapples with no change, and in the same feeding, then proceeded to give it 19 apples (I bought 20 and was planning on burning them all) and got a color change message (feather proc). So we'll see what Honey Yellow + 13 pineapples + 19 apples gets me in a few more hours. If I manage to get any undocumented colors, I'll work on finding a consistent way to get there. I have been terrible bad about doing this in a methodical manner, but I might get something to pop out from it, and I need to work on taking notes too.

Finally got Soot Black. From Loam Brown, fed two berries and one pear to get proc. So glad it's over. lol

Okay guys, I need to tell you that the one proc method is over; no more waiting 6 hrs every time you get a new feather proc message.

I think that AttacKat's post may be correct. My previous experiment bounced me back to Millcorn yellow. SO I've done one more experiment to see if I can get a more yellowy yellow than Honey (OK, let's be honest, I want the word 'Gold'. :-P) so from millcorn I played with rotating through Pears, Apples, and Pineapples (Green up, Red up, Blue down), and I found it REALLY interesting that I started getting a color change proc after each fruit, so I don't know what I'm dancing between there. finished that off with a Pineapple, so I'll probably wind up back at Honey. FFFF00 is as yellow as you can get, and that set of fruit should get the choco as close to that as the game allows.
