I tried playing on the Vita and I don't like it for one main reason...I have my cross hotbars set up so that my default hotbar with out-of-combat skills when my weapon is sheather and then to change to another hotbar with my battle skills when I R3 to draw my weapon. On the Vita, there is no R3 obviously so the Vita automatically unsheathe my weapon and switch to the battle hotbar. I have to use the main menu to change my stance or select any commands from basically breaking the experience for me...so I don't bother. Might be okay for gathering or fishing since I only have one cross hotbar for those, but otherwise - useless with that set up.

There's a R3 (and L3) button, the back touchpad is split into an upper and lower part, so there's a button in each corner.
Fishing isn't really convenient with it, as you don't have the rumble feedback and the screen is rather small to watch the fishing rod, so you only have the sound cues for catching.

You DO NOT have to be on the same network in order to use Remote Play to play XIV. I take my Vita to my parents/in-laws and use their WiFi to turn on my PS4 remotely and boot it up etc.

I can confirm this 100%. I play from work on my PS4 at home all the time. The Vita will first look for the PS4 on the local network, then check the internet. As long as you set up your Vita ahead of time, it will connect. That being said, I only do crafting, gathering, etc. I find the combat (I'm a tank) to be difficult, but YMMV.

Yea I heard that as long as you are connected to a network- you can connect to your PS4. Although I'm told it doesn't always work.

In the italian official Playstation forums some users where asking why Remote Play didn't work from different networks, a staff member answered that Sony recommends a network speed of 5 MB download/ 1 MB upload, wich is pretty hard to have in Italy at all... so yeah, I only use it when I'm home, but it's great for crafting.

Like it but the buttons being used through the back pad is sooo annoying. It messes me up because of how I am used to holding the vita.

If you customize the buttons you can disable the backpad for R3 or L3 (but not both) and the settings for remote play and regular play are saved seperate so your customized controls wont affect if you are playing on the PS4 itself.

The touchscreens get in the way and I also found that prolonged play started hurting my hands. I grabbed a shell to change it up a bit which helps but it still gets cramped. If I could turn off the back touchpad without eliminating required functions, I'd do it.

Performance wise is fine. I can run dungeons and even Syrcus Tower with it. Targeting can be a bit strange though.

Fishing while chilling in the garden... for the 5 days you can sit in the garden in the great British summer xD I've never ran dungeons on it, just done gathering, but I don't see why the easier ones (so, any expert/HM etc) would be a problem.

As for remote play over the internet, I've not had it working as my internet is terribad. My friend used his at work though and he was running Amdapor Keep over 4G with a fairly reliable connection, and it seemed to be working out ok!
