. . . That iconography choice was made back when Isghard was also a member, huh?
Four arms you can balance pretty easily, three arms probably makes the propaganda artists of Eorzea cry at night.
This explains a great deal about the state of things in Eorzea. Now I want to see newbie THM or ACN NPCs that are just learning to read accidentally casting spells from a cookbook, maybe summoning a Carbuncle with a tomato for a head or something.
That's assuming you need to know how to read to learn Thaumaturgy. It's very likely you just need to be trained.
Arcanists though... yeah I see the need to read there.
There's a great deal in the THM questline about the book: Thaumaturgy: The Yawning Abyss so it is likely that they do need literacy.
In Version 1.0, it was a running joke that the guild receptionist, Yayake, would threaten you with needing to memorize the contents of a very large stack of books before deciding that perhaps, for now, you might learn more in the field... this time. So, either literacy rates among adventurers are, as Ferne suggests, much higher, or she knew most people couldn't read and was just a terrible, terrible person.
"I shall refrain from making any further wild claims until such time as I have evidence."

The NPC refers to it in 2.0 as well. Something along the lines of "So you have to read all the tomes of this book before anything else... Or that is what you should have done if we didn't say it was pointless a few years ago".In Version 1.0, it was a running joke that the guild receptionist, Yayake, would threaten you with needing to memorize the contents of a very large stack of books before deciding that perhaps, for now, you might learn more in the field... this time. Funnily enough, the racial lore for Midlander hyur have long stated even back before 1.0 was launched that they are "trained in letters from a very early age", meaning that most Midlanders at least are literate, if not highly educated. There was a thread a while ago that debated just how educated Eorzeans were which had some surprising ideas.
I guess though that we now know exactly why the books you can buy as furnishings for your house/private chambers have blank pages.![]()
Hu...hmm...uh...wha-...oh boy...
