The merchant in the opening scene is actually one of three different people (one for each city - it turns out they're brothers).

Also it's revealed later on that all three are actually members of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn - after the escape from Castrum Centri they can be found in the Waking Sands, and in fact they're still there inside the Waking Sands as part of the victory party following the completion of the main storyline (after the ending scene and end credits have finished playing) - the one from the opening for the city you started in actually references your first meeting with them in that scene.

That's the last they're seen though from what I remember.

In 2.0 story the 3 meet up in Waking Sands at some point. Around when the Scions return to Waking Sands after the Mor Dhona stuff.

And we haven't seen them in The Rising Stones anywhere, hence my assumption that they died in the assault.

Actually, as I mentioned before, the three merchant brothers are seen after the ending to the game's 2.0 storyline at the Waking Sands alive and well, congratulating the player for

taking down Gaius and the Garleans.

But yes they're not seen again so their current (post Operation Archon) whereabouts are unknown. But given the fact they're merchants, they're probably out on the road hawking their wares most likely.
