One thing I noticed is that in the companion window, baseline chocobos are listed as being desert yellow, same as the dye. Makes me sorta suspect we'll be limited to the equipment dye colors.

They did mention you'll be able to colour your chocobo in all of the available dye colours, and I would hardly call that limited.
Compared to full RGB, yes it is limited, but you'll still have a lot of options to choose from.

In before people realize you need 255 of each item to make it max in one color.

We don't really have a lot of dyes, assuming the "choco scale" works on gear dyes and nor pure RGB values, i would have to count them to have the exact numbers, but i think every item will modify the scale between 10 and may be 30, again just rough numbers.
Correction:
well that makes 4-5 points per item.
That's a long grind for a black choco or white choco if it's pigment based

Over all still have to wait till my fruit is ready to harvest to even apply the testing. I have the blue and greens going so far.

Currently available colours:
Grey scale: 6
Red scale: 9
Orange scale: 18
Yellow scale: 9
Green scale: 17
Blue scale: 17
Purple scale: 9
Total: 85 (not counting terebinth)
Which roughly matches the estimate I've posted yesterday:
Each colour would have +2 / -2 steps from "middle" value - or if you want 5 steps of scale - e.g. in total 5^3 (5x5x5) = 125 which covers more than enough all current colours withs space for another 40 future ones.
Based on this you should be able to reach any colour in max 12 (4 + 4 + 4) changes - e.g. in 72 hours / 3 days in case all 3 hues are in the completely "oposite" side of the scale. Realistically though you should average in 6 (2 + 2 +2) to max 8 so 36 to 48 hours. Also - you can always reset back to default Desert Yellow "middle" without waiting using only one fruit so average to get from any colour to any other one should be max 7 fruits used in one and half day
And I think we should already establish some kind of simple notation how to reach specific colours (preferably noting the colours in between as well. Example:
(Default) Desert Yellow -> Hunters Green (the one I want as I use it on most of my gear as well):
1. Desert Yellow & -RED -> Kobold Brown
2. Kobold Brown & -RED -> Light Green
3. Light Green & +GRN -> Hunters Green
*Note this is only example, not the actual "recipe"![]()

Current Results: Still yellow.
Hypothesis: This will continue at least until personal housing is a thing.

If we are limited to paint colors already in game... boy, there's a lot of sht browns to try to avoid. :/
