I'm currently at Deepwood Green, trying to get Soot Black.
Last night I fed him a Valfruit, like one of the members did here, I got the message that the colours would change within 6 hours.
Then this morning I went to the stable to check if the colour had changed and there was no message or cutscene, the colour was still Deepwood green.

I have given it another Valfruit and got the message again, I will wait to see if it is finally happening.

You need to get the 'choco is growing new feathers' message. If you're not seeing this, give him Valfruits until you do or you will see no change.

The problem is that I actually do get the message and I do get the prompt when I try to fetch my chocobo.
But after 6 hours, there is no cutscene of change.

Woooo! Just got soot black last night!



Here was my process for anyone trying to shoot for it or any of the other colors I managed to stumble over:
Original -> 7 Darken Green, 8 Darken Red, 9 Darken Blue = ...Halatali Yellow
Halatali Yellow -> 7(ish) Darken Blue = Royal Blue
Royal Blue -> 3 Darken Red, 2 Darken Green = Woad Blue
Woad Blue -> 2 Darken Red, 2 Darken Green = Shadow Blue
Shadow Blue -> 2 Darken Red, 2 Darken Green = Loam Brown
Loam Brown -> 1 Darken Blue, 1 Darken Green = Soot Black

Okay, so if I can't get to Soot Black from Wine Red, or get Snow White from Ice Blue, if I was to start over from default what would be the steps needed? I don't understand all the color numbers stuff going on so if anyone can help me, please keep it simple in terms of how many of what fruit and how many feedings. Would be much appreciated.

If you want my opinion, just stay on track where you are now and get the Soot Black.

Starting over is going to take more than twice as long to get back to where you already are now. Not everyone can get Soot Black the same way on the first several tries, least not from my experiences and several others. Follow my guide and feed only the amount of fruit for as many "beginning to grow new feathers" messages you get. Unfortunately, there's really no simple way to get there. It just takes a lot of time, effort, planning and commitment. I'll be here though, as well as many others, if you ever need help getting there. From the start though, I can't really help with that since I have yet to claim Soot Black myself yet, and I don't think doing a full guide yet is deserved from me until I have something to show for it, but I'm working on it.

So ended up getting Dalamud Red if anyone have a very clear idea how to get to Soot Black that be awesome.

Try 3 plum 7 pear 7 berry | pear and berry will decrease a lot of red while green and blue will negate each other,the plums will try to control 3 colors in this order R>G>B.but since there's a lot of difference numbers between Dalamud Red and Soot Black,your result might end up brown or even darker red.

Applying the 2/2/2 ratio was successful to decrease red and green evenly, but blue was still increased. I will be attempting to add pineapple to the mix to offset this amount and see what happens.

I feed enough apples and berries to get from default color to Dalamund red (on the way to soot black) before server went down and it said growing new feathers each time, but I only ended up with millicorn yellow. It's like the other 4 transformations didn't work.

Unless only one change occurs every 6 hours (the other growing new feathers don't count)
