Chocobo dyeing R&D Thread - Post your results here!

Was at Kobold Brown, fed 1 Doman Plum, got the "beginning to grow new feathers" on first try. Got Ink Blue instead. Did Pineapples on Ink Blue, same result, got "growing new feathers" on first try, waited for 6 hours. Sent back to Kobold Brown. Something's not right here.

I've gone from Ink Blue + 1 Pineapple = Kobold Brown
Kobold Brown + 2 Plums (msg on 2nd plum) = Deepwod Green
I'm now trying Deepwood Green + Valfruit = ??? (hopefully black)

There's been 3 confirmed Soot Blacks on here so far. 2 from Kobold Brown, 1 was with 1 plum, the other 2 plums. The 3rd was Deepwood Green with 1 Valfruit. I'm HOPING that my bird's RGB levels aren't at a certain point where I'm 'stuck' and can't get to Black because my numbers are just at a point where it can't get to black without a major overhaul or restart.

The other possibility is perhaps there's some RNG involved on which color you're moving to when getting the New Feather's msg. Perhaps something like 'Kobold Brown + Plum = 20% Black or 80% Deepwood Green'. I'm gonna see where this Deepwood Green + Valfruit takes me. If it IS RNG then I'll either end up Soot Black or back to Ink Blue.

Hi, i have feed my Cochobo from the Orginal Color with Doman Plum x15, Cieldalaes Ananas x6, x12 Valfruit . He is now ice blue (and not snow white )

Last color I was at was Bark Brown.

I worked out on paper what fruits I had to give using +/- 5 points per fruit, and counting only the feeds that give the new feather message.

From Bark Brown it was 9 Berries, 8 Pears, 6 Apples, 1 Plum.

Hello all! First all I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. Unfortunately as its 150 pages long, I could only skim through them so apologies in advance if some of the questions I'm asking have been posted before. I also realize that there are many questions in this thread but I would appreciate if some kind soul would take the time to answer my questions before I throw away huge amount of gil.

1) From what I read, the only time a change in color is confirmed is when the "beginning to grow new feathers" message has appeared. Is that right? If so, here's a hypothetical situation. If person A feeds a berry and gets the message the first try, person B feeds 3 berries and gets the message and person C feeds 10 berries before getting the message, does that mean all 3 chocobos will have the same color? Or does person C who fed his chocobo 10 berries get a darker shade of blue than person A who only fed his chocobo 1 berry?

2) This kinda pertains to the previous question. If a person gets only 1 feather message after 10 feeds, does that mean that all prior feedings the effects of the fruit are not gained, and only on the 10th fruit or is it that you only need 1 successful feeding to see the effects of all prior feedings?

So to start, you're going to want to drastically lower those GREENs and REDs using BLUE DEEPEN'ers (O'Ghomoro Berry). This will have the adverse effect of raising your BLUEs, however getting all three colors around the same value will make the voyage to Soot Black a little easier. If you add in a few apples and pears into the mix, it should slow down your BLUEs from getting too high in the process.

OK so Im at Abyssal Blue -- 43 39 80

Correct me if I'm wrong Im going to use

Pineapples x 11 , Plums x 3 , and Valfruit x 2

What do you think Syrhen?

Current Colour: Abyssal Blue
43R, 39G, 80B

Desired Colour: Soot Black
37R, 35G, 30B


If you were to use the fruits that you suggested you would end up at something like 93R 99G 50B which is not the desired outcome. I would try the following combo:

x5 Apples
x5 Pears
x1 Berries

This combo should result in an RGB of around 38R, 34G, 35B and should push you into Soot Black range (if not you'd be very close). Remember your mileage may vary. For Science!

This probably caused me to make my first post ever; But if someone could answer a question that may or may not have been answered already that would be great... How are you calculating x amount of fruits you need for desired color changes? Currently my chocobo is Halatali yellow after feeding 10 apples, berries, pears. I took a shot in the dark still trying to figure out where I'll end up and gave it 10 more berries so to you knowledgeable ones, where should I end up on the color chart after my last session? I too, am trying to obtain a soot black chocobo as well.

Desert Yellow > Raptor Blue > Othard Blue > Regal Purple > Bark Brown > Soot Black.

I pretty much fed only berries, pears and apples so as to balance them out whilst decreasing all 3. At the end I used a plum.

I have Chocolate Brown what do you think i should use to get to black?

Going by the same method I used from Bark Brown, I would suggest the following:

Berries x5
Pears x5
Apples x7
Plum x1

Make sure the stable is in Good condition. Start feeding berries until you see new feathers. From then on, count ONLY the fruits that resulted in new feathers towards the above recipe.

You feed them all at once, and continue to feed the amount even if you trigger the "growing new feathers" message.

What is happening behind the scenes is you are shifting your Chocobo's hidden RGB values around (even if you don't see the indication of new feathers). Each dye appears to have a range for each color (I.e. 25-35Red, 100-120Green, 150-160Blue for color "X") and if all three numbers are inside these values you will active that plumage color on your next change. When you see "growing new feathers" message, you have effectively pushed yourself from your current color range into a new one.

*Example*
Color "X" Range = 25-35Red, 100-120Green, 150-160Blue
Color "Y" Range = 25-35Red, 100-120Green, 160-170Blue
