Try Rythea's calculator. Got me out of the loop and to the color I wanted and couldn't get:
This simulator seems quite perfect and can calculate all jumps in one go. (you can go from your yellow to black in one sitting if you so choose)

Copy the original, as it's read only.
Select the color you have now or had before feeding last, then the one you desire.
Erase the current fruit names and quantities from the white fields on big chart, nothing else (or you will erase the v-lookup formulas)
Type in the fruits you just fed or are thinking of feeding and it will calculate the end result, as you add and remove fruits you'll see what the next result is (and it seems very accurate and the range of +/- 5 doesn't seem to need adjustment.)
The chart can be used as reference, failed for me but the idea of what to feed overall works: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1814x979q90/661/vBZmlD.png
hey i wanted a shoot black chocobo so after reading some time here i decided to feed it
20 * Xelphatol Apple
20 * Mamook Pear
20 * O'Ghomoro Berry
my result after waiting was acorn brown
can someone please help me?

Check my post above yours. The calculator will tell you where you are, where you need to go and use the flow chrt to add fruits as indicated to get to Soot black, adjusting quantities as needed.
Your red is currently too high, your green slightly so. You will probably need some berries, but don't go overboard. Adding that many fruits is a waste and changes cap sooner with just one or two feeds.
I just checked and 15 berries, 11 pears and 1 apples should land you on soot black
Due to forum posting limits I can't help with coloring as much as I'd like, so visit me here: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/2168293/blog/1568406/ for my coloring "blog".
Rorichan and kgbrown247, your answers are there!
Do the numbers you input equal the raw amount of fruits or "feather procs"?Try Rythea's calculator. Got me out of the loop and to the color I wanted and couldn't get:

They all matter, it's amount of berries. So far, we have seen that the proc only indicates a change in color took place, but what comes before also counts. Some people have changed colors with one fruit, others with 3, and as you'll see in the calculator, there is a tolerance in the range of where you land that when viewed in changes across RGB, you may land in one with one value being higher than the the accepted and may need one more or less fruit to get that value to change into the desired color.
As it calculates through all the colors to land at your desired, it goes through the ranges that may add up over time with feeds and considers that for adjustment (you may have landed in Sunset Orange same as me, but depending on feeds, your red value may be higher than mine and we may need one more or less fruit overtime)

Current Color: Dalamud Red
Target Color: Soot Black
Diet: 9x pear / 7x berry / 1x plum

Wow, I just posted the simulator link on a whim, as I wasn't sure how accurate it was in the long run. Was trying to help an FCmate this morning and saw like 70 people viewing it. I did a few edits, added an in-spreadsheet note about needing to make a copy, and how to do so. I also found an actual formula for determining the "closeness" of colours, so it might guess the colour name more accurately now (assuming the +/- 5 rule holds, at least).
Anyways, with the free week coming to and end, I wish you guys all the best of luck in your chocobo colourings, probably won't be around to update the sheet anymore, so anyone is welcome to do so.
